June 13th excerpt:

His hand was around the kid in seconds, plucking him free of the edge. Dean lifted Jacob up to his eyes. “What in the world were you thinking?” he demanded.

Jacob blinked rapidly, as always a little dazed with how quickly he moved in Dean’s grasp. He was getting used to it, which was weird all by itself, but he still had a ways to go. In the meantime, it took him a few seconds to put together a coherent response to Dean’s question.

“I was thinking I’d get to the floor,” he answered, a little cheek and a lot of dizziness in his tone.

Since you come to us and ask, I will answer this in good faith and assume you mean no ill will when you do this.

It is time to get on my pedestal and preach, so it’s fitting for me to preach the gospel of all content creators on tumblr (and elsewhere):

REBLOG, DO NOT REPOST

Why?

If you take any type of content, may it be fanart that was drawn for a story, writing, original characters or any combination of the three, you are stealing credit from the creators of that content. They will get less views, less acknowledgement, less interest on their site. If you reblog the post, it raises the chances that new viewers or readers will find their way over to that creators site.

This applies to other sites as well! If someone has created art on Deviantart, do not take it and post it on facebook. Link or not, the creator will never see this unless they stumble upon it by accident, and when they do, they will feel betrayed, they will see people commenting on it that don’t know it’s theirs, they will grow disillusioned. If you want people to continue to create, SUPPORT them on their websites, do not repost their stuff.

When creators grow disillusioned, they will slap watermarks on their art. They’ll stop posting their story ideas, start hoarding them for themselves or even worse, loose the desire to write/draw, leaving less for the rest of us to enjoy.

No one wants that! Let your artists and writers feel the love they’re due, they deserve every bit!

If in doubt, there’s a few questions you should ask before reposting anything:

Is this my work?

If it is, great! Post away, share your story, let us all see!

If not, continue down the list of questions:

Did I ask permission from the original artist to post this?

If you did, and if they said yes, post away, and be sure both follow the artists requests about their work and always include a link to their work so others may enjoy the rest.

If not, ask their permission. If they say no, that is their right. Respect it. Do not post their work.

Is this a commission I purchased from said artist?

If this is a commission you bought, and you included the permission to post to your own site while negotiating, post away (following the artists rules if they have any about reposting) and link back to the artist so more people may commission them in the future.

Starving artist is a situation many people are in, and after the hard work they put into their art, they deserve the credit and the $$ for it!

Not all commission artists allow their work to be reposted. Discuss this with the artist before you go ahead and post it. We do this with every artist we work with.

Do not repost commissions you did not pay for! For these you will want permission from both the original artist and the person who commissioned the art!

All works found on the Brothers Apart tumblr, the deviantart/fanfiction/archive of our own accounts of @nightmares06, @neonthebright and @borrowedtimeandspace are not to be reposted anywhere without permission.

I’m sure my other writer/artist buddies will have plenty to add on their own, and if anyone wants to know more, check this link!

Bowman Lost Excerpt

neonthewrite:

Stale bread from some strange giant creature wasn’t his first choice, either. Bowman frowned, but told himself he truly didn’t know when the next chance at something edible might come along. He needed his strength to deal with his situation.

He lifted the piece of bread to his lips, feeling the coarse texture before parting them. His eyes shut tight despite the darkness and he took a modest bite.

It wasn’t terrible. There was something odd about it, a lack of grit despite being bread, but it passed.

I’m sure living with Dean has its ups and downs for Jacob, so he’s not constantly terrified of what Dean’s about to do. Just… most of the time?? ^^; Poor kid could use a long vacation back with Sammy.

We’re not sure when it’ll start but we’ve gotten a great reception with these excerpts so we’ll be sure to bump it up in the editing order to prepare it for the poll!

Dean could use a good scolding. We all know that Jacob is but a teddy!

Jacob deals with things in his own way. He aims to be chill most of the time, so even when he is freaking out, it can be hard to actually tell. Especially when he’s already so smol and Dean’s just kind of a hurricane that goes when he gets the idea to go somewhere.

So so many things would be cleared up if Jacob wasn’t afraid to just talk things out. ;w;

Nightmares

It’s been a while since we’ve seen anything new from Oz. This is a small update, but even a little step is one step closer to the end. That’s a good thing, right?

(x)

“Wake up, little one,” Noriko coos. Her voice is soft and gentle even as she nudges Oscar’s side. He opens his eyes and sits up to stare out at her. The glass front wall of his doll room is gone. Only her big smile remains to wall him in.

“Good morning, sweet baby,” she greets him. She can barely contain her squeak of delight as Oscar rubs sleepily at his eyes.

When he stands, he’s right in front of her, looking up. She always has food for him in the morning, and it’s usually fresh fruit. He likes the food, even if he doesn’t like being her doll.

He has to remind himself. He doesn’t like being her doll.

“Are you hungry?” she asks. He nods. It makes her smile again.

A hand looms in his vision and Oscar shudders, but has nowhere to run and hide. She pats his messy hair down with one fingertip in a gentle, caring motion. It’s not the worst. Oscar knows to let her, and the motion will be over with sooner.

Her fingertip trails back and Oscar’s heart skips a beat. As it approaches his shoulders, he opens his mouth to ask her not to touch his back. She can’t or he’ll-

A wave of pain twinged down Oscar’s back as he woke with a start. A muffled squeak escaped his throat and he slowly came out of the weird dream. His surroundings were darker, not as colorful. He lay on his front, because lying on his back was still agonizing.

After nearly two weeks, his burns hadn’t healed yet. The human that gave them to him came once a day to check on him and sometimes applied new bandages. Other than that, Oscar was kept alone in his own small cage.

Something about already being conditioned. They didn’t want him to talk to others of his own kind, lest they influence him. Oscar never was sure what that could mean. They’d still all be trapped.

He heaved a sigh and winced. Even the simple movement of his torso from breathing agitated his sensitive skin. He couldn’t tell if he was getting used to the pain or if it was lessening by the day.

Whatever the answer, Oscar had woken thirsty. He glanced across his cage where a plastic dish of water waited. Several inches separated him from it.

He shifted, clenching his jaw as he did. With the same care he’d grown used to, he scooted himself off the folded cloth that was his bed. Cold metal touched his bare front, but he didn’t mind. Crawling like this was the best way to keep from moving too much and hurting his back. It was almost soothing to feel something other than the sharp sensation over his back.

Oscar didn’t pay much mind to the world beyond his cage. Only the front was uncovered, and it didn’t offer a very interesting view, only a nightmare room with dingy lighting and more cages on shelves.

It was kind of like his old doll room in a way, except not as comfortable.

No cage is comfortable, he reminded himself. Not even Noriko could dress up a cage enough to be anything but a trap.

Oscar reached the water and propped himself up next to it the best he could so he could scoop some out. It soothed his throat, despite being the same temperature as the room. That, at least, was nothing new.

There were footsteps somewhere in the hall. A human approached. Oscar closed his eyes and sighed. They might leave him be. They might. If not, he was ready. His nightmares never got better, but he at least knew what to expect.

June 12th excerpt:

Dean licked his lips. “Is that really what you think?” he asked hoarsely, shoving himself back to his feet. He almost stumbled away from the table, blindly grabbing for his jacket. Something in him wanted to get out, get away…

Somewhere he wouldn’t have to see the fear in Jacob’s eyes from the night before flash into his mind again.

“W-wait, Dean, lemme just…” Jacob tried to say, but Dean wasn’t listening to him. The human didn’t acknowledge him at all and seemed entirely out of sorts after the question.

Bowman Lost Excerpt

neonthewrite:

They were on the move. Bowman drew in a shaky breath, and then another, and felt the motion around him. Everything leaned back and forth as the car turned this way and that. He couldn’t tell which direction things went, and couldn’t even figure out how fast the thing could go. Bowman was no stranger to speed, as the fastest wood sprite in Wellwood.

I guess I’m not the fastest in Wellwood anymore, he thought bitterly. Someone else will be once they realize I’m not coming back.

No one has found any way into the walls just yet, but Oscar’s been keeping a close eye out!

Really, Gabriel made the entire place out of his own little miniverse, so he might not have gone that far into detail. Or wants to keep the little guys within reach in case any trouble crops up. The rules he set down must not be broken. He did give them a good place to get out of sight on the tables where small dividers separated the two size levels, in case they need space.

Asunder Sam will have a blast either way, and get to see what it’s like in a dive bar like he remembers from childhood!

June 11th excerpt:

Jacob sighed and shrugged before reaching out to push Dean’s hand. “Sure, running towards the monsters. Sign me up.”

“Hey, as long as I’m running towards the monsters, it means they ain’t about to chase after me,” Dean shot easily back, smirking at the featherlight feeling of an amazingly small hand trying to push against his. On his own, Jacob would never be able to move the hand, but Dean played along and moved it away. Before getting out of reach, though, he curled his hand and playfully messed up Jacob’s hair. He couldn’t pass up a prime opportunity like that to mess with the kid.
