Guesses for the mystery AU!
Since no one has gotten it right, here’s a compilation of all the guesses so far to give you all a hand:
- A kid finding a cursed Dean
- A kid finding both cursed brothers (not the mystery AU, but a possibility for BL)
- Field Borrowers
- Both brothers are cursed and John saves them
- Reversed Brothers Together, where Dean got cursed and saved by Sammy
- Hitchhiking Sam, off to find his brother
- The witch gets Sam when he’s first cursed
- Sam/Dean grow to be a giant instead
- A brother is cursed and either Bobby or Gordon finds them
- Sam is cursed as an adult and meets the Watch family later on in life instead of as a child
- The trickster switches the brothers sizes (likely for a story within an AU, not an AU by itself)
- Sam adopted by a human family after being cursed
- Sam caught by other humans with no one around to save him
- Sam is cursed at a different motel
- Sam is adopted by sprites
- Sam and Dean are borrowers for most of their life
- The Winchesters genderswap
- Sam raises a family of his own that fits in Dean’s pocket (just plain adorable, really)
- Sam and Dean shrunk as adults (more likely for a canon story, since the curse in BA only works on children)
- Borrowers and humans coexist
- Sam had to survive on his own
- Dean discovers Sam earlier/later on in life
- Both brothers cursed; one has the curse broken
All good guesses but none hit the mark! If anyone gets it right, there will be a sneak peek put up for everyone to see!
Other points of interest brought up:
- The AU will involve one or both of the brothers being cursed
- The curse will happen at Trails West
- Bowman or Oscar may appear in the AU, but not as one of the central characters
- Celeste is involved to her normal extent; as the source of the curse
- One of the three campers from Fairy Tales: Bowman of Wellwood is involved in the AU
- The guesses that come closer to the mark without hitting it have been bolded!
Getting warmer, but nope, these are not what the mystery AU will be!
I might do something in the future with only Dean shrinking down being found by a kid. The interactions would be fun, and seeing how Sam comes in just as fun. Big-little brother to the rescue! Or something. But nothing on the table just yet.
A kid finding both shrunken brothers… I’m not going to say anything more than that might come up in Brothers Lost. Don’t want to spoil everything, after all. 😉

Brothers Switched sounds perfect. I like that name. The only other one I had was Brothers Reversed.
I think Brothers Found would fit it great. Dean has to come in eventually… hopefully. Just depends on how it happens and if he knows/realizes who Sam is. That’s currently the most likely title for the series!
Here’s hoping someone figures out the mystery AU! I’ll have to go digging for a sneak peek if that happens.
Naming this one is turning out to be the hardest yet. Brothers Together got named about a week after we conceived it, and Brothers Lost only took a few hours for my cowriter to name… Brothers Apart had the name the moment I came up with the idea. And this story has been written on and off for over four months now and I’ve got nothing.
Any ideas out there? Maybe the name is just waiting for us to find it!
That’s the background for Brothers Lost, and John does not end up finding the brothers. He believes them both dead, and leaves the motel.
He was supposed to be out there. Saving people. Hunting things.
He wasn’t supposed to be the victim. Trapped by a witch and a curse that tore his entire world away. Everything gone but Sam himself.
Dean skidded to a halt when he reached the end of the bed and scanned the room once more. Sam did the same, checking their area in case Dean missed anything. Patience was key, as Walt repeated over and over again.
He held a hand out to Sam, signaling that he would go first. He was the oldest. It was his idea, so he’d take the risk.
If anyone’s wondering why no prompts have posted recently, it’s just because the prompts I want to write are turning into full stories. Prompts are still open, and I hope to have the time between all these different stories to finish up a few shorter ones soon! The holidays are making that difficult.
This is a great guess! It’s actually a version that I never thought of for myself, but I bet Dean would have some entertaining adventures as the smaller brother. I wonder who John would leave in charge once Dean’s been downsized.
Any other guesses for the mystery AU? I wish I could think of a clue that wouldn’t give it away… Hmm.
A world traveling borrower. That’s an adorable idea, but nope. The AU will not be the traveling Sammy. Or, at least not traveling on his own.
But if anyone wants to write this, it sounds adorable. Gotta find his big bro! The Impala’s out there somewhere!

You won’t be missing out on anything! The AU will be posted no matter what, you just won’t have a sneak peek for it until someone guesses. And really, we’ve been working a lot on it behind the scenes, so it’s got three little stories to it already. None of the AU’s, aside from the BT shorts with Oscar, will be posting until after A Lich of Sense, just because of possible spoilers with that story. ^-^
