Cursed as an adult

It’s entirely possible that you’ve answered this before, but I was wondering what it might be like if Celeste’s curse was used on one of the adult brothers? I know they wouldn’t get the knack that the cursed children get, but how else might that experience differ?

I might have, but I don’t remember when, so I don’t mind answering again!

As the curse is perfectly viable on adults, it’s naturally possible that this could happen in the future. Celeste just chooses to use it on children because of the added bonuses that they get from growing up with angelic grace inside of them.

Though an adult might not get as strong of a knack, they do still have the grace and a faint one will still develop. It won’t grow as strong as though they were raised from childhood like that, but it’s still there. Knacks manifest in people directly cursed more often than borrowers born and raised. 

Adults also won’t get much of a strength bonus, and they’ll have very weak nightvision in comparison.

The only exception to this is when Celeste first began her experiments. She cursed adults and children alike, and because she didn’t know the exact ratio of what she should use, the adults got a far stronger injection of grace and all exhibited powerful knacks of their own– the first of the borrower race, and the hardiest survivors.

I actually was writing out a bit of that first discovery, but haven’t had the time to complete it or fix it up, so have a look: 

Adriana bolted upright with a gasp, her long dark hair swaying in the breeze as she instinctively knocked the ant away with an arm.

An ant that was larger than her hand.

The creature recovered in the dirt, its mandibles clacking as the antennae quivered in the air. Adriana faced off with it, staring with dark eyes at the creature that should not exist.

And then she shrieked as the rest of her senses caught up with her mind, and were overwhelmed.

Falling to the ground, she brushed at her arms, her legs, her face, trying to shove away the foreign feeling that something was there, crawling all over her. Invasive, it infected her veins, her skin, the tiny hairs on the back of her neck. Confining, controlling, touching at her magic and pulling her mind in a thousand different directions.

Adriana screamed, but no one was there to help her.

Kara Bolt’s knack

When will we find what Kara’s knack is? It says on the offical knacks thingy that her’s is only unannounced so does that mean she has one?

Yep, she does! Any character with unannounced listed for their knack has one but we’re currently keeping it secret.

Normally it would get announced either when it appears in a story, or when it gets guessed, but since it’s not featured in any stories yet (only just came up with it, after all!), it has to be guessed for everyone to find it out!

The only characters that we revealed the knacks to without having them guessed were John and Mary Winchester, and that’s because right now I’m not planning on any stories for the entire Winchester family to be borrowers currently.

One fun fact about Kara’s knack– Since she’s a natural born borrower, she doesn’t have to wait for her knack to develop! She might not realize it, but she already has her ability. It just needs to manifest.

Burnouts

They could, but anyone that tries this is going to need a lot of power. Like, archangel level power. Burnouts aren’t easy to heal because of the angel grace the knack draws power from, and if their ability to harness that power snaps, it’s going to need a lot of OOMPH to break back through.

Nixie might have enough power to manage it, she’s able to see the threads and could try and knit them back together proper, but it would be a very difficult healing compared to her normal work.

I’m sorry if this has been answered before, but how soon after being cursed does a little’s knack start up? I know that Brothers Together said his knack came through after a few years…

It depends on the person, and how strong the curse is when its put on them (by the time Celeste curses Sam, she’s refined her technique, but some of the first borrowers to be cursed exhibited signs of their new abilities within days or months because of how overpowering the grace was).

Sam and Dean generally start to exhibit real signs of their knack around 2 – 3 years after they’ve been cursed. It starts out as weak twinges, and then grows in strength. Dean’s uncanny ability to always stumble into food becomes an ability that lets him track down anything he needs. Sam thinks he’s just good at predicting when a human’s about to walk into the room, but instead he’s feeling that their attention is coming closer to him.

A borrower that is born instead of cursed will have that ability their entire life. Whether they exhibit will depend on their specific situation. Only 1 or 2 borrowers out of 100 will actually show signs of their ability, the other 98 go on not realizing they have an ability at all, much like Walt Watch did until the moment he needed it most. 

Of course, the borrowers that the story tends to focus on are those with their special abilities, so we’ll be seeing quite a few new knacks as the stories progress!

Lol! While it is true that borrower Sherlock shares a lot in common with Dr. Strange, his knack actually comes right from the BBC Sherlock TV show, and how Sherlock is shown.

His ‘deduction thing’ often shows him racing ahead of the rest of the world while he figures everything out, and this is an extension of that! It took an integral part of how he thinks and allows him to project it on the rest of the world, so now he’s even faster.

Chances are, John gets slowed down a lot.

It kind of works with the way the show is too! When Sherlock concentrates on a crime scene, he sees everything in a short amount of time. I like it! Cool!

Exactly the effect we were going for with Sherlock! He’s one of the borrowers who’s knack builds off of his own character, much like Dean and tracking.

Does it make him more speedy or just more of fast runner? Like, I’m guessing it includes his entire body and not just the legs… 

Awesome! You guys got close enough that I can now officially announced what his knack is as a borrower!

It isn’t exactly enhanced speed, but it’ll look that way to an outside observer. Sherlock is actually one of our stronger knack users.

He just needs that flair!

  • Time Distortion: The ability to slow down or stop time. A very strong knack that requires training to sustain for longer than a few seconds. In Sherlock’s case, he is able to slow down time around him, enabling him to escape with a speed that can’t be matched, and make observations that no one else would ever notice. When he stretches his ability, he can include others in this. He can’t stop time like an angel; it will always move forward

@borrowedtimeandspace: I like to imagine it like a Sherlock-shaped bubble, separating him into his own little time zone that happens to be different to everything around him. To include others, he needs to concentrate harder and expand that bubble. Though, Sherlock being Sherlock, he tends to prefer going it alone. Here’s a little peek into how it works for him!

He concentrated, and everything around him fell slightly out of focus. All noises were muffled far into the background, and when he looked back at John, he was moving so slowly that he might as well be still.

Sherlock let out a relieved breath, but kept going, knowing this wouldn’t last long.

For just a moment, Sherlock was faster than the entire world.

A guess for Stan’s knack

We are pleased to announce that you are indeed wrong!

In Brothers Chosen, borrower Stan was manipulated and abused, but not by his own knack. That would be an extremely sad way for him to get stuck thinking that way, but the good news is a person with emotional manipulation probably wouldn’t be able to manipulate themselves in the way you described.

Stan’s knack is not emotional manipulation, but it is a form of manipulation. So you have half of the answer for this one!

When it comes to knacks that allow borrowers to manipulate others, they rarely work on other borrowers or themselves. Though a few of the borrowers with emotional manipulation are able to affect their own kind, the angel Grace that’s in them gives them a stronger resistance to it compared to humans.

A shield like that is not only possible, but it’s the eventual ability of one of the characters in the stories. They’re able to make a ‘bubble’ of protection around themselves and sometimes their friends. It’s considered one of the stronger abilities, because of the way it can hold off a human.

Actually, all knacks will grow stronger as the borrower ages!

With Sam’s knack as an example, he starts out just knowing that someone is glancing in his direction. It’s a very vague sensation. 

As he grows up and the strength of his knack increases with exposure to humans, he starts to be able to differentiate between danger and safety. It’ll start to inform him the direction the danger comes from. Once it’s strong enough, he could pinpoint a sniper aiming a weapon his way and sense when the attack is coming.

Would Mark’s knack also grant him enhanced speed? Is enhanced speed its own knack?

Mark’s knack does not give him enhanced speed. More like enhanced agility. The strength in his legs allows him to push off harder and lengthen his strides significantly compared to most borrowers, but he’s still running normally. It’s less about speed and more about distance, if that makes sense.

Enhanced speed is indeed its own thing entirely…

It won’t be BORING, that’s for sure!
