Bowman Lost Excerpt

Bowman let out a cough when the thumb tightened against him and then shoved him upwards along the palm without any warning, and then the fist closed around his body from the waist down. No matter how much he kicked his legs and pushed against the index finger curled in front of him, he couldn’t escape. That pulse surrounded him and the heat from the giant’s skin encased his lower half.

The giant snagged one of Bowman’s frantic wings in a pinch grip to hold it still. It twitched and Bowman tried to pull it free, but he might as well be trying to push a tree over. The giant was too strong and Bowman’s heart pounded with the worry that it would only take one little tug for the giant to lame him for life. “You’re okay, little guy. I’m not gonna hurtcha.” The giant’s dismissive reassurance rumbled around him.

“Just imagine my great relief,” Bowman shot back despite his fear. “Let go of my wing and let go of me! How many times to I have to say it?”

The giant’s mouth twitched. “This knife isn’t for you, little guy,” he said gently. “It’s for the strings. I don’t wanna try untying anything and pinching you.”

With the explanation, the giant decided to move again regardless of what Bowman had to say about it. The knife closed in, and Bowman wriggled like a worm to try to keep away from it. It was in vain. The thumb resting over him was more than enough to immobilize his chest, and the rest of him was hindered by the tangled ropes. He couldn’t avoid it.

May 7th excerpt:

Dean bumping the nightstand may have jostled Bowman and Sam a bit. Perhaps it caused Sam’s current thought to have a wayward scribble over it. Maybe Bowman’s wings were rumpled.

For Jacob, the effect was amplified. The vibrations from an innocuous motion shook the lamp that Jacob perched on and it bucked him off.

He pitched forward in surprise, his arms flailing to the sides. His cup went flying, probably behind the nightstand, as Jacob fell face first into the pool of beer with an inaudible splash. The drink soaked him instantly. It was cold and it stole away all the warmth he’d just gained in the lamp light. Jacob’s eyes stung even though he had them shut tight.

Bowman heard the sounds of things clattering together, but they didn’t sound like anything he recognized. Finally, after an age, the hand opened and allowed the sunlight to fall on Bowman and the breeze to cool him after his long time stuck.

There was a knife in the giant’s other hand.

Bowman released a cry of horror and moved to roll himself over on the hand, give himself a chance to crawl away and escape.

May 6th excerpt:

“Somebody help me out of here!” Bowman shouted, twisting in his cramped confinement. The paper around him shifted and rolled, but instead of staying where he turned over, it rolled over once, twice …

And right over the edge of the surface it was on.

Bowman yelped, squirming even more as he plummeted. The falling sensation tightened in his chest and buzzed in his limbs. He couldn’t get his wings open. His heart pounded at the thought that he could be falling from a deadly height.

And he couldn’t get his wings open.

Bowman couldn’t help but think of wolves then. They could set ambushes for their prey, leading it right where they wanted it. Then, they could strike.

Bowman was the prey now. Prey of a thing big enough to crush him with a hand, and smart enough to lay a trap for him. He squirmed and writhed and only found himself more and more tangled as he did so. There was no escape, and those footsteps crashed closer.

The fingers crowded around him more and more, and no amount of pushing could stop them. Before he knew it, Bowman found himself hidden away in a fist. Only some of the afternoon light peeked in, taunting him while he did his best to keep breathing and fighting his own capture. He groaned with fear and effort, pushing his back into the palm while he shoved at one finger. The skin gave under his touch, but otherwise he had no effect. He was useless.

“N-no…” he whimpered, the word barely escaping him. His heart fluttered and his eyes stung. A headache, sudden and fierce, pressed in on his skull.

A noise that didn’t fit in with the rest of the forest sounds reached him, and Bowman sucked in a breath. His ears pricked to the sound of something walking through the foliage, something with enough mass to push aside many of the low bushes that grew throughout the woods.

He thought of deer, gentle, enormous creatures that hopped through the forest on light steps on occasion. They migrated near the village sometimes, but often not for long. A deer wouldn’t be an issue.

Then, he thought a wolf. Not as common as the deer, the hulking canines were still a much fiercer predator than their cousin the fox. Wolves walked on enormous paws and bared teeth the length of a sprite’s arm. Not many sprites could boast the bravery to face one. Bowman only knew of one, and it wasn’t him.

April 28th excerpt:

Bowman grinned, both sheepish and entertained. “Jiria will probably try to bop me for not telling her I was going.” He didn’t sound overly concerned by the statement even as he said it. After all, it was for a very good reason. Besides, if she wanted to bop him, she’d have to catch him first.

“The king of ‘bops’ getting bopped? Unheard off.” Dean laughed as he leaned back. A quick glance to the nightstand revealed Sam and Jacob both out cold and safe on the shirt, letting him relax. “I’m sure you’ll figure it out when you get back. Hopefully it won’t take us too long to get you back to her to tell you what’s what. Everyone wants Jacob back to normal.”
