Valentine’s Day Sneak Peek

As a gift to my followers, have a sneak peek from a future Brothers Apart story!

Curled into a ball, Sam listened impatiently to the voices that echoed above him.

They had stumbled onto a case up by the Great Lakes one morning that had both of their spidey senses tingling. A man was found dead in his home while his wife was out. All doors locked, the alarm system armed and fully functional. The oddest part was his heart had stopped without warning (he was only 40). In the subsequent autopsy that had been run on the body, the doctors had found, of all things, a cupid’s arrow pin in his heart.

Like it had simply materialized there by magic.

Needless to say, the authorities were baffled. Dean was betting on a witch, and Sam wasn’t about to bet against him.

Which was why he was curled up into a ball, safely tucked in Dean’s hand and waiting for an opportunity to get out and search for the hexbag while Dean smooth-talked his way into the house.

He couldn’t help but squirm a little in place, trying to find a comfortable position as Dean walked into the house at last. The huge fingers cupped around his body flexed open a little at his struggles, giving him space.

Even as he gratefully shifted to a more comfortable position in the increasingly hot and enclosed area, one of the fingers he was leaning against twitched in what he recognized as Morse Code.

Bitch.

Smirking, Sam pounded out his own shorthand into the fingers with sharp punches, telling Dean off.

Jerk.

January 15th excerpt:

The drop was sharp, but the landing was soft, and Stan ended up in a tangle of limbs at the bottom of Sam’s pocket. He had difficulty finding his feet in the oversized hammock, clutching the fabric around him for some semblance of stability.

When he finally fell still, sitting in a corner with his back pressed to a side seam, Stan’s eyes widened. The world shifted ever so slightly back and forth as Sam breathed right next to him, hearing the dull roar of those massive lungs as they filled and emptied in time. If he concentrated, he could make out the thrum of Sam’s heart deep within the expansive wall of muscle he found himself leaning against in his temporary sanctuary. A heart Stan might be able to fit inside, lungs large enough to be rooms, maybe even small houses!

“Oh, boy,” murmured Stan as Sam’s magnitude hit him like a ton of bricks. He thanked goodness that Sam was as mindful of him as he was.

May 21st excerpt:

Jacob sat at the bottom of the pocket for a long while, letting his food settle and trying not to think about the fact that he was stowed in a pocket. If he closed his eyes, it almost felt like a hammock. A hammock with a huge heart pounding not far away and a sway lent to it by huge lungs filling with air, but a hammock nonetheless. The sensations filled him with unease. Jacob wondered how he’d ever get used to this.

February 2nd excerpt:

Asleep or not, the moment Sam latched a hand on Dean’s jacket to scale up to his chest, the steady breathing pattern hitched underneath his touch. Sam smiled, knowing that meant Dean had woken up.

He didn’t halt his climb, though, or even miss a beat. It took him mere moments to reach the top, and he sat down right over Dean’s heart. “How’s the ground treating you?” he called up to Dean with a knowing grin as Dean continued to pretend sleep. There was a furrow in Dean’s brow at Sam’s words, but nothing more.

May 4th excerpt:

Playing along with the tiny kids, Dean moved his hand so it was directly against where his heart was hidden away in his chest. “How’s it sound from here?” He’d be lying if he wasn’t fascinated in the answer.

“Now I can really hear it!” the nestling confirmed. Now that they were closer, the young sprites shifted towards the huge wall that was Dean’s chest, tilting their heads towards it. They were fascinated by the sound, something they had never heard at such a scale before.

The little girl leaned her head against Dean briefly, her eyes widening at how much that amplified the sound of his heart beating away. The whole thing was bigger than the sprites there, possibly all of them together. The girl leaned back to stare straight up at him with a fascinated grin. “I can even feel it! Your heart is so big!”
