August 7th excerpt:

“She’s gonna get seen! ” Stan hissed, clutching at his hair in distress. His nerves were strung taut and tightened further the longer Arrietty spent in the open, nowhere near cover. All the boy would have to do was glance over, and she’d be noticed.

Sure enough, as Arrietty was getting up to leave, she knocked over an action figure, and it clattered to the floor far below. Stan couldn’t hold on a gasp or keep himself from backing up an inch or two as the human on the screen was alert and after the borrower in his room instantly.

March 21st excerpt:

The human’s foot tapped against the floor absently, and high above him the underside of the table echoed with the scratching of a pencil. Oscar swallowed dryly and steeled his nerves. The human was busy. He couldn’t see him and he wouldn’t hear him walking on the carpet fibers. This wasn’t even the first time he’d snuck under the table like this.

The vibration in the floor from the tapping foot was a drumbeat for his nerves. Oscar snatched up a discarded piece of granola, easily half the size of his head. Some days, that was enough for his one meal of the day.

January 11th excerpt:

Mark cried out in alarm as the hook sank its tooth in inches from where he was crouched. A second later, he felt the air shift behind him, and he whirled around to find the human peering at him through the gap in the chair.

November 14th excerpt:

Before she could move a muscle, the gigantic hunter out in the reception hall glanced up at the vent. Those green eyes locked onto Krissy and the blood in her veins turned to ice. Recognition appeared in those eyes as she ducked down, shaking. Walt had once called it a ‘phobia,’ but it didn’t matter what they called it. Krissy was terrified of humans.

How?! her mind demanded. How does he know I’m here?!

September 29th excerpt:

His heart was pounding a frantic beat. Oscar’s entrance to the walls was nowhere near the dresser. He’d aimed to just wait until the human crashed into bed, and no worries would occur. He could still do that, but now Oscar had the knowledge that two poor souls were captured by that human.

And … it seemed they were trained  or something. They’d needed permission to get out of the duffel bag. That they were carried around in a bag like that in the first place made Oscar feel a little sick. What if they’d been jostled around? What if they fell out? Would the human care?

August 28th excerpt:

“D-” he enunciated, and then immediately paused. His cheeks turned red while he whispered the sounds he knew to himself, trying to work out the pair of vowels. His hands worried the strap of his bag. “Eh, ah, um…” He huffed quietly and then his eyebrows shot up. “Dean?” he tried, saying it slowly and looking up at the human with a hopeful glint in his eyes.

April 6th excerpt:

“Dad,” Bowman spoke up before his father could fly far. Gunner glanced at him, schooling his concerned expression into a neutral one. “Be careful, wouldja? This thing seems pretty dangerous.”

Gunner smirked faintly and nodded. “You got it, kid,” he answered before darting away. Bowman rolled his eyes before wandering closer to Jacob. In short order, he’d landed right on the human’s head.

“Comfy?” Jacob asked, amused. A wing, spread wide, slapped down on the top of his head.

March 20th excerpt:

Sam almost held his breath as the human came into view. Footsteps that looked like normal steps sent vibrations through the ground, shaking him all the where from where he was hiding in the shadow of the backpack. The sight of the immense guy stretching sent chills up his back.

The kid was tall.

He was clearly younger than Sam, his features softer. That wouldn’t matter very much, unfortunately. Sam couldn’t be longer than a finger, if that.

March 19th excerpt:

Bowman flew side to side, and banked in a loop around the enormous thing, as quickly distracted as Sam had been. He checked it from all angles, frowning at the strange materials of it and glancing up at Sam to see if he knew what it was. Bowman dove closer to it, curious and wondering if … maybe a giant was nearby!

There were other oddities in the clearing. Right in the middle, a spade bigger than Bowman’s bed sat idly next to a pit dug in the ground, one almost as deep as Bowman and Sam were tall. Pieces of wood, broken and arranged neatly, were piled next to the clearing’s one boulder.
