I was wondering, how do you think that Dean’s big brother instincts change from the show to each of his interactions with the different littles or when he’s a little himself? (Maybe not change so much as change how their expressed…)

It all depends on the little in question!

As far is Sam is concerned, he is ultra protective, but the first thing Sam will do is scold him for not giving him space or independence. Dean tends to take stuff like that to heart, so he’ll lay off (a little), and Sam won’t feel so stifled.

Of course, if you don’t tell Dean right off, he tends to get in habits, and might end up just casually picking you up and taking you wherever he is, as Jacob can well attest to in certain future AUs. Sam would be the first to tell him he shouldn’t let Dean get set in his ways! 

As a little himself, he’s an incredibly fussy guy. He’ll lecture Sam for days if he gets himself picked on at school, and when Sam’s a smol Dean does his best to keep him away from danger. It’s a lot harder for the little guy, but he tries!

July 24th excerpt:

“I’ve never heard there might be anyone else,” Jacob admitted. “I never thought about living on my own like this. Everyone kinda thinks I can’t.” He glanced down at himself pointedly. He was less than four inches tall, and couldn’t even get down from a table on his own.

Dean frowned at what Jacob was implying. He’d been raised to take care of Sam since he was only four, the idea of being told what he could and couldn’t do was an alien thought.

“Just because you lost a little height doesn’t mean you turned into an infant,” Dean said gruffly, holding out a hand for Jacob again. “Fine, you’re smaller than me. But you can do things I can’t.”

They’d have a hard time getting their independence, but I feel like John’s friends, such as Bobby and Pastor Jim would help Sam and Dean out here. The brothers can’t be stifled for their entire lives, after all. Bobby especially would be a huge help.

There won’t be any Brothers Apart AU like this written by me because I don’t enjoy writing John Winchester, but by all means if anyone wants to give it a try, they’re welcome to!
