On Sam’s Knack…

anonymous  asked:

if Sam is hiding in the pocket, fully hidden and unnoticed, but Dean is chatting with another human, will the knack be mildly active due to the proximity or turned off completely?

Sam will, but only under certain conditions!

The knack is wholly psychic, so it operates without him actually needing to be seen. If someone glances at Dean’s pocket, he’ll feel a slight tingle and know to stay still. If someone actually knows he’s there, it’ll grow much stronger. The strength of the alert he gets is related to if someone has actually seen him and if they mean him any harm.

As it is, Sam will most likely elbow Dean to let him know whenever that happens. This way Dean can be sure to keep their attention off his pocket, or leave the situation if they’ve figured him out.

October 21st excerpt:

Sam cupped his hands, looking hopefully up at Dean.

With a sign, Dean flipped open his pocket. “Just remember to keep him out of sight when we’re close to the motel,” he warned Sam as he scooped up the kid and handed him over.

October 16th excerpt:

The outside world was bright, a thin cover of clouds blocking out the sun. Dean shaded his eyes as he looked up. “Drama queen,” he muttered about Sam. None of the clouds above looked like they were ready to storm, so into a pocket the keys went and Dean walked along the sidewalk, heading towards a small bit of forest bordering the nearby park.

September 20th excerpt:

Curious about what was going on, Oscar worked up the courage to pull himself towards the opening of the pocket. All he needed was a glimpse of where they were going, and he could hop back down without even Dean noticing. He hoisted himself up to the edge and paused before shakily trying to nudge the pocket flap just enough to peek past it.

September 19th excerpt:

Seeing that Dean was about to take him out of the hidden confines of the pocket, he curled up into a ball again. Part of it was from nerves, but Oscar knew he needed to help the humans keep him a secret here, no matter what. Even if it meant coming out for a few seconds to go to a different pocket.

September 18th excerpt:

Sam looked worriedly at Dean. “You gotta be careful with him!” he warned quietly.

With a rueful grin, Dean shook his head in exasperation. “I take care of you, right?” he reminded Sam. “He’ll be fine with me.”

Reaching for Sam’s pocket, Dean flipped open the flap and went to scoop the kid up into a confined fist to avoid anyone else spotting what they had hidden.

September 10th excerpt:

“You can’t let anyone see him,” Dean talked fast, both brothers walking with rapid, long strides to cut down on time without a flat-out run across the field and forest between the motel and the school. “If they grab, they might hurt the kid. We need to look out for him until we can get him back where he belongs.”

“I know,” Sam said with that unique way kids have of sounding completely exasperated with their family for pointing out the obvious.
