June 16th excerpt:

Next, Sherlock took the remaining sample and preset it under the microscope, focusing all his attention on carefully squeezing drop after drop of warm water from the teapot next to him through an eyedropper onto the sample to watch the crystals dissolve. He waited until the process had stopped after each drop, though given the size of the sample it wouldn’t take long at all before it was all gone.

As focused as Sherlock was on his experiments, he didn’t realize he had a visitor.

Bowman Lost Excerpt

Bowman didn’t have enough time to really look at it before the human’s hands rushed at him. He dropped to a seat as his prison was seized and dragged along, a loud scraping filling his ears. His wings drew tighter to his back and he cringed away from the giant. It didn’t matter. There was no escaping the inexorable slide until he was in the giant shadow.

One hand braced against the side of the container, and Bowman stared at the huge fingers splayed in front of him until he heard the popping up above. His gaze flicked upwards in time for the red lid to tilt away from the rest of the tupperware.

It would be enough space for him to wriggle through if a giant hand wasn’t already snaking its way in. Bowman’s heels scrabbled against the floor in a desperate attempt to push himself further away. Those fingers curled towards him like creeping vines, bringing with them the radiant heat and faint smell of skin and dirt. For a second, Bowman thought he caught a memory of his home forest in that scent.

For the borrowers, they have a 9 month term pregnancy, just like humans! Having a child is more dangerous, because instead of going to a hospital and getting help from a doctor, they have no pain medication and instead rely on a midwife, often a close friend that lives nearby, especially in America, where they’re spread out. In London, they do have more specialized trades, so there would be an actual midwife to help.

Wood sprites tend to have a slightly shorter term. Luckily, they have a strong community around them to help with the birth. In Wellwood, the new mother is usually led somewhere just outside the village when it’s time, and then once the baby is born and cleaned up they come back home. Mama rests and everyone holds the new baby sprout. Thank the Spirit that wood sprites are born with their wings all curled up!

June 15th excerpt:

The thought brought on an exasperated sigh, and he angrily chewed through the rest of his biscuit as he mulled it over. On some level Sherlock wanted to hear Dean out. He trusted Dean as a partner and knew he could rely on his judgment, but still–

I think Bowman would probably move on from this pretty quickly even if he stopped to think about it. He knows humans seem to radiate heat, but since they already baffle him in a lot of ways, that kind of goes along with the whole package. He’d rather pretend it’s no big deal than look ignorant about it.

As for smol Jacob … seeing how chilly the little guy is will make him fret. Jacob is not meant to be so teeny and shivery. He’s supposed to be a gigantic giant that puts off too much body heat!

June 14th excerpt:

John gave a light groan, feeling a kink in his neck coming on as he lifted his head a bit to blink the blurriness from his eyes and focus on the figures standing by the books.

“Hey,” he whispered as he rubbed at his eyes. He glanced at his watch, then offered a tired but warm smile. “Bit early to be up. Everything okay?”

He kept his tone light and conversational, not wanting either of them to feel put on the spot. John wasn’t interrogating them, just checking up in case they needed something.

Bowman Lost Excerpt

Something rattled just outside the dark prison, and then a bar of light shone in and rapidly expanded. Bowman threw his hands over his eyes as late afternoon light flooded all around him. Despite loving the sunlight and the life it provided him, it hurt after so much total darkness.

“Get any rest, little guy?” the human chuckled. Bowman wasn’t prepared for the tupperware to suddenly lift upwards, and he had to take his hands from his face to brace against the floor. He left the trunk behind, and then the giant slammed it shut once more.

The tupperware was once again carried in the crook of the giant’s arm. Bowman scrambled to his feet and leaned against the wall to squint through it. Past the hazy barrier, past the thick arm, the world was completely new. Bowman was fascinated, but more than that he was scared.

Extra bitty Jacob definitely notices the chill once or twice. His body holds less heat and his clothes are thinner than even Sam’s. In the end, he has to stick close to the others if he wants to retain any body heat. Sam and Bowman might not produce as much warmth as a human can, but they do manage better than wee Jake.

Besides, Jacob lives up to his reputation as a teddy. Hugs from a mini-giant are sure to keep such a bitty guy warm.
