Okay, really random question brought on by my own struggles with hearing loss, but what would happen if, in the BA universe, a witch hit Dean with a curse that temporarily caused him to lose either his hearing or his sight? How would the brothers react to that?

This would take some adjusting for sure!

If Dean lost his hearing, he’d need to be far more aware of Sam to begin with, since now his brother can no longer call out for his attention. They’d start out communicating with writing, since Dean has no current experience with ASL. One bonus is that he does, in Brothers Apart, know Morse Code, so he can tap out a message to Sam in an emergency, and interpret what Sam’s trying to tell him on the fly (they use this on a few separate occasions when Sam’s not in sight).

If Dean lost his sight, he’d have to rely on Sam’s directions for getting around. Unfortunately, this would mean that Dean can no longer drive the Impala, so they’d better hope this is a reversible spell!

I have seen a few of these issues tackled in stories before.

In the Deanzilla storyline on fanfiction, Sam briefly loses his vision and Dean directs him Ratattouille style! That’s what Sam gets for growing his hair out. Sam also is pretty much a wrecking ball, it’s a good thing Dean’s not on the floor through all this considering he knocks everything over and sets the place on fire. Dean, your directions need work.

You can find this scene here, but I recommend starting with Deanzilla vs Hydros, as Measure of a Man is the sequel to that story and there are heavy spoilers.

Another story to tackle similar but different issues is The Dean Dilemma. Instead of Dean losing his senses, he ends up invisible, and tiny Sam has to deal with a giant older brother he can’t see.

There will also be a story dealing with Dean’s selective mutism as a child when he goes through a trauma, though that story has not posted yet.

If anyone else knows of any supernatural g/t stories that deal with these issues, let us know!

Official knacks in the Brothers Apart multiverse

Though there are many different stories, no matter what, a knack will always remain the same for a particular cursed human!

That said, here is the full compilation of canon borrower knacks that we have for the characters within the stories. Any that say unannounced has a knack, but we haven’t revealed it at this time! Any that say unknown, we’re still working on!

This list is subject to change as the stories evolve, and more characters/knacks may be added at any time.

Main Characters

Sam Winchester–

  • Enhanced Awareness: This can either enhance an already understood sense to supernatural levels, or give the borrower a ‘sixth sense,’ much like how Sam can feel if he’s being watched. His ability does not work on other borrowers, the angelic Grace around their souls keeping the perception from working on them.

Dean Winchester–

  • Enhanced Tracking: Trackers, like Dean, are able to use their ability to track down their target with undeniable accuracy. There are limits, as Dean can only track down objects he needs. He is unable to apply this to people, and if he can’t conjure up that sense of need, nothing will happen. This is not limited by distance, though if he’s far from an object, he only gets a sense of what direction it’s in.

John Winchester–

  • Perception Filter: The ability to be unnoticed and/or ignored in presence and actions. John’s ability is unique, so far as he’s discovered. He is unable to apply this ability to himself, but has found that if he concentrates, he is able to hide his family from notice, even if a human opens up the walls and looks right at them. This allows him to leave without worrying that they will be found, though of course, stuff doesn’t always go to plan.

Mary Winchester–

  • Terrakinesis: The ability to control the earth. While John’s ability tends towards more protective with his family, Mary is ready to go on the attack. She can’t affect entire buildings like the angels, but she can rock the ground just enough to knock a human off balance, buying time for her to escape. This works when there’s concrete, rock, stone, ect underneath the ground. She is unable to affect wood paneling at all and is cautious if she needs to go over a wood floor. With this ability, she was able to slowly carve out a safe home for her family underneath the ground. Adding in John’s ability to keep the family undetected, it seemed a good place to raise their two boys. Mary keeps several pebbles on her that she can flick at an attacker in case she needs a quick escape. Dean certainly got his accuracy from his mother.

Bobby Singer–

  • Psychometry: Bobby’s knack allows him to learn from books and artifacts at a glance or a touch. He’s unable to read people, but if he gets an item of theirs, he can know what it was used for, how it will be put to use in the close future. This includes seeing that a knife will be used for a murder, before the murder happens.

Jacob Andris–

  • Supernatural Strength: Some, like Jacob, grow stronger than even other borrowers. This comes from their innate ability to turn their knack on their own bodies by instinct. While Sam and Dean receive the standard borrower strength boost while cursed, allowing them to lift around 12x their body weight, Jacob is able to lift, at only 18, a colossal 42x his natural body weight. If he was human-sized, he could bench a car without breaking a sweat.

Oscar–

  • Pyrokinesis: The ability to manipulate fire in limited forms. Oscar would not easily discover this knack, as a fire in the motel room walls might cause the entire place to go up in a blaze.

Walt Watch–

  • Telekinesis: The ability to manipulate objects outside of their direct reach. This can often cause a borrower to be mistaken for a ghost, moving objects in a house without touching them for a distraction. Walt Watch has taken the ability further, freezing two humans in place and later directing his power at himself to force his razor blade through Celeste’s neck despite her angelic invulnerability. This came close to burning out his knack.

Mallory Watch–

  • unknown

John Watson–

  • unannounced

Sherlock Holmes–

  • Time Distortion: The ability to slow down or stop time. A very strong knack that requires training to sustain for longer than a few seconds. In Sherlock’s case, he is able to slow down time around him, enabling him to escape with a speed that can’t be matched, and make observations that no one else would ever notice. When he stretches his ability, he can include others in this. He can’t stop time like an angel; it will always move forward

Stan Baker–

  • unannounced

Moira Wainscot–

  • unannounced

Side Characters

Chase Lisong–

  • Emotional manipulation: The ability to influence the emotions around him, with no need for physical contact. A way for Chase to keep the peace among whichever group he’s in, or, if he can manage to get close enough, make a human tired or inattentive enough to escape notice.

Bobby Loran–

  • Power borrowing: Bobby is able to borrower the knack of other borrowers for a limited amount of time. One at a time, and since he’s not used to them he wouldn’t have as much finesse with them. He’d be quicker to burn them out than the actual “owner” of the knack.

Minnie Lisong–

  • Life detection: Very useful for finding out if a human is in a room, or seeing if there is a possibly dangerous rat or spider hiding in the walls.

Kara Bolt–

  • unannounced

Christian Bolt–

  • unknown

Mikael Foyer–

  • unknown

Mark Bend–

  • Supernatural Strength: Unlike Jacob, Mark’s ability only applies to his legs. His legs are supernaturally enhanced, able to leap high into the air compared to a regular borrower.

Sean–

  • Invisibility: Though the borrower does not make themselves actually invisible in most cases, the invisibility knack allows them to camouflage and blend in to their surroundings. In Sean’s case, he can cause a cloud of distortion that hides himself and any of his friends that stand close enough.

 Bardolph–

  • unknown

Xander–

  • unknown

Garen–

  • unknown

Harmony–

  • unannounced

Adriana of the Woods–

  • unannounced

Stan Baker’s brothers–

  • unannounced for all

Hiatus over

I’m getting things back up and running, I just happen to be going a little slower than expected because on the last day of vacation I came down with a cold.

Feel free to send in any questions! Remember, we have this site set up to accept anonymous questions. If you don’t want to attach a name, you don’t have to!

There will be a new chapter of Burglary posted in less than an hour! I’m getting it ready now.

Luminous Arc asked:

I’m actually gonna piggyback off this question. For my entry into the contest I had a few of the tols in a homely setting. So I’m kind of interested in their second question — while at home and relaxing, are they the type of people to go barefoot or wear socks? For characters like Jacob, in his house is it common to wear shoes inside or are they the type of household who leave their shoes in a small locker by the entrance?

For the most part, this is going to come down to pure preference for the family in question. A lot will likely leave their shoes by the door to avoid tracking mud into the household. On the other hand, younger kids (and hunters like Sam and Dean) won’t take off their shoes or boots unless they absolutely need to.

Dean, for instance, barely gave in to taking off his boots when he was watching a movie while sitting in bed, and he only gave in when Sam insisted, tossing his boots in the corner in Jacob in Wonderland.

In the Andris house, Mariana likes to keep things clean. She makes sure outdoors shoes are left by the door if she can. Jacob wears socks around, and so does his stepdad. Mariana herself wears flat slippers when she’s in the house.

Andris Household Floorplans

Originally requested by Luminous Arc

The Andris family has two households that might be relevant. When Jacob’s father was still alive, the family lived in a small one-story home. In the present day as far as most AUs are concerned, Jacob, his mother Mariana, and his stepfather Mike live in a two story house that’s slightly nicer than the one before.

AUs featuring the early house: Brothers Unexpected, Brothers Adopted (without Jacob around, Mariana never moved even after remarrying), and Brothers Sought.

Otherwise, the second house will be the layout for the stories.

Pictures to follow (I didn’t use a ruler and my handwriting is a thing, hopefully it’s all clear).

At this time, I don’t have individual room layouts planned out (and I forgot to mark the archway into the living room from the hall), but in general this was a crowded but loving home. Jacob enjoyed his childhood in this home and spent a lot of time playing in the backyard.

Rooms aren’t perfectly scaled here, but this is the general idea of the house seen in most of the AUs.

Furniture sketch layout. It’s very basic but this is the general layout of the important rooms in the Andris home. One of Mariana’s jobs is a work-from-home job, and she does her work at the desk in the living room; however, everything is kept very tidy and clean. Things are less crowded here, but it’s still a very warm and inviting place.

Luminous Arc asked:

What stories do you recommend reading that star Jacob’s family more prominently? I’d love to learn more about them. Additionally, is there a (general) floor plan of his house?

You’re actually in luck very soon!

Though we do have Jacob’s family at least touched upon in a few other stories, his home will be featured a lot closer in the upcoming story There’s No Place Like Home in Brothers Lost. This will begin posting after A Burglary at Baker Street ends later this year. There is no current posting date at this time.

We do see Jacob’s mom and stepfather appear briefly in the first story of Brothers AdoptedFamily Ties. Mariana wasn’t at her best in that story by far after dealing with Jacob’s ‘death’ for so long.

You can also see Jacob’s father, Nicholas Andris, appearing in the short story Doing Good, Kiddo? Warning for a very upsetting story dealing with cancer.

In the future, Brothers Unexpected will have Sam adopted by Jacob’s family growing up, so we will be seeing more of all of them! Jacob’s a big part of the multiverse storyline now, and he’s certainly the adopted little brother of the group.

Neon drew up floorplans and layouts of the Andris family homes (the one they lived in with the late Nicholas Andris and the one they live in now). These will be detailed in their own post coming soon~

Given smols (without flight) are usually level with the ground, one of the first things they see is a big’s feet.

I’m curious. What type of shoewear do the bigs in the BA multiverse prefer? Also, when at home/relaxing do they favor socks or no socks? Lastly, for human-sized bigs, what are their shoe sizes? Who would intimidate a grounded smol more?

Thanks for your time!

Well, the Supernatural verse parallels reality in how people look and dress per area, and BA parallels Supernatural, so we won’t see huge differences between the tols in the verses!

Hunters like Sam and Dean tend to wear boots, which are certainly intimidating for a smol to see! We’ve got a few scenes in Jacob in Wonderland where Jacob has the misfortune to end up on the floor completely unknown to Dean, wearing a hoodie that blends in with the rug.

The Brits in Brothers Consulted mostly stick to dress shoes, and Stan certainly has a good sense of fashion compared to the others!

Are there stories of yours where the main group witnesses a smol being killed by a human, either intentionally or accidentally?

We don’t have any on-screen death of smols when it comes to being accidentally killed by a tol, no.

There are stories that do go into the possible dangers of living near humans, so there is a death by crushing that spurs the story in Garlic and Cold Spots, a Brothers Adopted story.

Another accidental death occurs in Brothers Lost, where Melanie’s friend dies in a bathtub full of water. You can find this in The Water’s Fine.

We rarely write out on-screen deaths, with a few select exceptions.

I’m sorry if this has been answered before, but what would have happened if John Winchester found both of his boys hit by the curse at the time that it happened? Would he have stayed with them or just dropped them off at Bobby’s?

It might have come up before, but I can’t remember for sure, lol.

John would have brought them to Bobby’s at first, because it’s one of the most secure places around for hunters of the supernatural.

Since both brothers are cursed, they can’t risk leaving them on their own. John and Bobby will work in shifts tracking the witch, a week at a time. When one’s on the road hunting her, the other is watching the boys.

Her trail evaporates very quickly, and it’s not long before John has to face the brutal reality of having two tiny children in a life of hunting. Bobby can’t watch them forever, and it’s not safe to leave them at such a vulnerable size.

It won’t take long for the brothers to feel more like a burden than John’s children in this scenario.

**I won’t write out this kind of scenario, mainly because John Win is a big source of writer’s block for me.
