Jacob clenched his jaw before giving in and asking “Look, can you, uh, get me out of here? I can’t climb out myself.”

Sam turned his wary gaze to the source of the grumbling voice, and the sight of Jacob in a crib derailed his growing concerns. He walked over with a slowly growing smirk. Dean might come off as the snarky brother, but the truth was that they were evenly matched. Sam, having more patience than Dean, found it easier to hold back most days.

Today, with his head scrambled and his sleep interrupted, he had no intention of following through with that.

He put a hand on the edge of the crib. “I dunno. You think I outta kid-proof the room first? Someone might be looking out for you, putting you away like this.”

Jacob’s expression flattened and he pursed his lips. He almost couldn’t fault Sam for finding it funny. The joke was just lying there in wait. Staring up at the smirk that had so casually moved in on Sam’s face, Jacob had to roll his eyes even as his cheeks turned pink.

Winchester sass. Figures. Definitely brothers.

And…

Sam tore out of the kitchen. “Time to go!” he snapped.

Spotting Jacob next to the main entrance, he darted forward. In seconds, Jacob was unceremoniously hauled in the air, dropped in the satchel, and then Sam was yanking open the door, easily grasping the handle that had been out of Jacob’s reach. He ran flat-out into the unknown, open space around them.

“Sam, I…” Dean’s tone said that he wanted to explain, to beg for forgiveness, to apologize…

Sam cut him off. “Dean. I need you to do exactly what I say. I know you want to help, and this is what you can do. Put us on the nightstand. Get us a bottlecap of water and a sliver of ice, and a damp washcloth. Then I need you to stay away.”

His eyes met the panicked green ones above. The guilt welled up in Dean at the blatant verbal slap from Sam. He’s right though, Dean’s thoughts whispered insidiously. You’re no use to them. You’ll only get in the way. You’re their biggest danger.

You always will be.

It was a time of madness and insanity.

This does give me the chance to let you in on a fun fact about writing Jacob in Wonderland!

All those chapters, all that intensity, was condensed into just over one month of writing. Sleepless nights, stressful days at work, pent up frustration bubbling into our writing, it’s all there. Writing when we should be doing other things (ie. eating and shit), ignoring life obligations, it was a heady time for storywriting.

It was one of those things that once it started, had to be finished, and we weren’t resting until that time.

On the other hand, it took over a year to edit the thing, so there’s that.

No problem!

It is definitely the longest story we’ve written, with the closest second place story lagging behind by around 20 chapters right now!

Jacob in Wonderland will be over 70 chapters long, and we won’t have a more exact estimate because the chapters might be adjusted as needed.

(They’re long, and harrowing)
