April 28th excerpt:

“How was research?” Stan wondered, just as excited to hear about Sam’s day in as he was to partake in the spoils of his day out with Dean. Such interesting and enticing smells wafted from the mountainous paper bag, not to mention the pie. The last thing he would ever complain about was the way Sam and Dean fed him.

April 27th excerpt:

It was to no one’s surprise that Sam was still hunched over his books when they returned, not only pie but an order of Chinese food in hand. Dean shook his head as he set the huge brown paper bag down on the table, covering up half of Sam’s work.

“Hey!” Sam said, startled out of his train of thought. “I was–”

“Going to take a break,” Dean interrupted, putting the pie down next to the bag. “You ain’t doing us any good if you work yourself into the ground.”

February 5th excerpt:

“Havin’ fun with that book?” Dean snarked as he got back into the car to pull it around to their room.

Sam rolled his eyes. “The more we know, the better off we are.” He didn’t look at Dean, but he already knew… “Did you get her number?”

January 17th excerpt:

“Hello, dear,” the woman greeted. “Can I help you?”

“Yeah, I, uh,” Sam pulled out a scrap of paper he’d scribbled on the night before with a few ideas for books. “I’m looking for books on witchcraft and curses for a paper I’m working on,” and there goes any chances of coming off as normal, he rued, “and then if you have anything on… tiny people?”

The woman arched an eyebrow at the books. “You mean like The Borrowers? ”

November 3rd excerpt:

“When you’re out, you should stop at the library,” Sam mulled, glancing at the books they had. “Nothing here is really going to do us any good. And pick up a paper at the store to see what’s going on in town now.”

Jacob nodded blankly. A part of him focused on how casually Sam listed off what they needed. Things like library and newspaper weren’t in Bowman’s vocabulary at all, but just like when he navigated the laptop with ease, Sam didn’t even have to think about it. He just knew what to do next. Jacob was glad to have him around, because he never would have found anything on his own.

“Can do,” he said appreciatively. Odd as the errands were, he could actually do them. Better than spinning his wheels on research he didn’t fully understand. “I’ll wash up and head out … ” his eyes strayed to the notebook he’d kept next to the laptop. “If there’s something specific I should look out for at the library, jot it down?”

October 21st excerpt:

Jacob didn’t make a lot of conversation while he was eating, not when the only other people around were so little. The sprites didn’t like to think of it, so he was well conditioned. In the end, he was back on the laptop after retrieving one of the old books for Sam. More than once, Jacob’s focus drifted off the latest web page to peek at the way Sam had to go to so much effort just to turn a page.

Each time, Sam would stiffen, the microscopic hairs on the back of his neck raising at the feeling. At first, he tried to hide the reaction, staying hunched over the book until he had to shuffle to the next page, sometimes turning it while remaining on the book, occasionally stepping off to push it over.

This time when Jacob looked, Sam was already looking back, sensing the glance coming and sending an annoyed, bitchy glare. “Something on my face?” Sam asked grumpily, the long hours of research showing in the lines etched around his eyes.

Jacob, all of six feet and five inches, flinched as that glare leveled on him.

March 28th excerpt:

Jacob didn’t move a muscle. Even Dean’s most careful steps rattled in the nightstand. He wondered what it would feel like if Dean actually had his shoes on. Jacob barely breathed. That hand, laden with a huge basin of water, was like a low flying plane coming ever closer.

Dean knelt and lowered the soap dish to the center of the nightstand, placing it lightly on the surface. “Okay, so just let me know if you need anything else. I’ll just be doing research…” He figured they didn’t want him sticking around, so he shifted in place, readying himself to stand back up.

September 25th excerpt:

The brothers both had their own ways of searching, and the room once more fell into a companionable quiet while everyone digested their food and relaxed. The case had them tense, and a moment to regroup in the safety of the room was welcome.

Sam stiffened, and then read over the passage on the screen. And again. He paced restlessly in front of the screen, sending a quick glance at Dean and glad his older brother’s knack only worked on where they were, and didn’t let him read minds.

Dean wasn’t going to like this.

September 24th excerpt:

Sam let his head fall against his chest, closing his eyes in concentration. “We need to research,” he said. “I can’t think of anything in Dad’s journal that matches this.”

“Maybe we missed something,” Dean said.
