Dean Rescues Sam

(Part 4 of 4)

It was only a ten minute walk to school, and passed by quietly for the first five minutes. Dean was deep in thought, wishing there was something he could do to help Sam. But… he’s too small. It’s too dangerous. What if someone grabs him? He’ll be better if he stays in the room while I find a way to break the curse. John’s words reverberated in his mind. Look out for Sammy, Dean. He’s too small to look out for himself. It was like Sam had become something that just needed looking after, instead of a son. A burden to carry.

Dean could never think of his brother like that.

At the five minute mark, he felt a shifting in his pocket. He caught himself before he jumped, internally groaning as he realized the only thing that could have hitched a ride in there like that.

Dean stuck a hand in his pocket, and sure enough, a tiny body clothed in jeans and flannel tried to squirm away from grasping fingers. He gave a laugh as he briefly pulled Sam out, shaking his head. “Sam, what were you thinking? You heard dad about it not being safe out here for you!”

Sam uncurled from the ball Dean had scooped him into. There was no fear in his face when he looked up at Dean anymore, a fact that Dean was proud of. He never wanted to scare his little brother.  It felt like he was winning Sam’s trust back, even with the huge difference in size.

“Yeah, right,“ Sam grumbled. He scuffed a shoe against Dean’s palm. “Not safe. Instead I get to sit there and listen to dad lecture me all day. He has no idea what it’s really like and he’s coming up with ‘rules’ I have to follow!”

The unexpected vehemence from Sam caught him off guard. Usually his little brother was the one that always had a smile on his face. The curse must be wearing on him… Dean winced at the memory of John glaring down at Sam. Their dad hadn’t caught sight of the tiny, curled fist that Sam kept behind his back, trying to hide the way it shook from fear.

Dean couldn’t say no to the puppy eyes his brother pulled out, not even when they were almost too small to be seen. He gave a laugh. “Yeah, I get it. He’s going to kill me when we get back.” He’d just have to tell John that it was his idea. The last thing they needed was Sam getting yelled at again.

He lifted up his hand to his shoulder. “How’s the hoodie sound for hiding? That way you can tell me if anything happens.”

Sam lit right up, reminding Dean why he did stupid shit like this. Even though he expected to see the Impala come flying around the corner at any second, he let his brother climb onto his shoulder. A tiny weight dropped into his hood, and Dean started walking again.

“You’re helping me with the quizzes, though, pint-size.”

(Part 3 of 4)

Dean tried to ignore the argument as he sullenly got ready for school, shoving an extra notebook into his backpack. It wasn’t like he was going to be in the school long enough to actually learn anything. What the hell was the point?

John glared down at his younger son, who was doing his best to stand his ground on the table. At only two and a half inches tall, a glare like that wasn’t easy to look into without flinching.

“Dad, it’s just school,” Sam protested. “How can I keep up if I stay in the motel all day?”

“It’s not safe,” John said grimly. “What if someone sees you? It’s not a risk you’re taking. You’ll be safer back here with me. When Dean gets back he can fill you in on what he learned.”

Sam rolled his eyes, knowing as well as Dean did that his older brother rarely paid attention long enough in class to soak up the lessons. John’s eyes narrowed. “Sam…”

“Fine,” Sam snapped. He kicked the pen that was left near him on the table. “I’ll stay,” he finished in a mumble.

John nodded sharply. He spotted Dean, still standing in the shadow of the bathroom. “Don’t you have somewhere to be?” he snapped. The recent reveal of his younger son’s curse had left his patience thin. Dean and Sam were both treading on thin ice constantly.

Dean didn’t say a word, just swung his backpack onto his shoulders. He tried to give Sam a reassuring glance, I’ll be back soon, but Sam refused to meet his gaze. Great, Dean thought. Bad enough he had to leave the two of them alone. Worse that neither of them was happy with him.

John grabbed a set of clothing, stomping into the bathroom. “Make sure the door is locked behind you!” he shouted at Dean, paying no mind to the way Sam flinched at the loud noise.

Dean shuffled his way out of the room, trying to draw out the time until he left.

He was so withdrawn into himself that he never noticed the weight that slipped into his pocket when he passed by the table.

(Part 2 of 4)

The first thing Sam became aware of was the rushing of the ocean.

The world shifted with him, gently rising and falling like the tides. Sam’s eyes fluttered for a moment, then settled closed again. The warmth that surrounded him on all sides was soothing and calming. A pulse beat through him, inviting him back to sleep.

Slowly awareness began to return. Flashes and visions hit his mind. The door, breaking down. Dean shouting. A flash of light… and then nothing. Cold eyes framed by blonde hair stared ruthlessly down at him as the blast hit.

That did it.

Sam startled awake with a shout, throwing his arms up defensively. The ground under him stopped moving suddenly, the gentle rise and fall freezing completely.

Sam gasped in a breath, trying to remember what had happened. Where he was.

“Sammy?” came a groggy voice. It rumbled under him this time, making up his entire world.

In the darkness of the room, shapes started to coalesce. Lurking, powerful monuments. Looming figures. His pulse went up as he realized he had no idea where he was.

“D-Dean?” he called out cautiously. At least the voice was familiar if the sensation of the booming volume it talked in wasn’t.

The ground under him started to shift. “Lemme get a light,” Dean mumbled.

Sam froze as what it all meant started to sink in.

The light snapping on overhead gave his horror form. He wasn’t sleeping on the ground. The ocean waves weren’t bobbing him up and down.

He was on Dean.

Sam was crouched on Dean’s chest, the older boy only partially awake as he rubbed at his eyes. And Dean didn’t seem surprised at the fact that his younger brother, less than three inches tall, was on his chest.

Sam watched the massive arms soar overhead as Dean yawned. With his eyes closed for that one fatal second, Dean didn’t see the panic rise in Sam’s eyes. He missed the small body tense.

Sam bolted.

Within seconds, Sam was sliding down the sheet Dean was lying under. His mind was speeding through priorities. Find Dean, find Dad, get away from any giants. Nothing in him would allow the thought that the giant he’d left behind was, in fact, Dean, and that John would be even more gargantuan.

Dean shouted in surprise. “Sammy, wait!”

Sam tried to dodge a hand that grabbed at him, but it was so much faster that the fingers closed relentlessly around him before he could escape. He struggled, trying to dig out the knife Dean had given him a few months ago. If he’d ever needed protection, now was the time.

Dean was too fast for him again. Those fingers sealed Sam’s arms to his sides, keeping him helpless.

Sam trembled as he was lifted into the air, staring up at the huge eyes of his captor. Dean’s expression softened at the fear in his brother’s eyes. The fingers uncurled, setting Sam free on his palm. “Sam, it’s me, I promise. It’s Dean. You got hit by that witch, but I’m not gonna let anything happen to you.”

Minutes stretched out, an eternity of time. Sam’s breathing started to slow enough for him to catch sight of the rest of the room around them. A room that was made for Dean’s size. Not Sam’s.

He huddled down into the hand, terrified of everything around him. In the blink of an eye his entire world was torn away, replaced with massive monuments, towering structures he would never reach. Even a light switch was beyond his grasp.

Everything but Dean.

The hands shifted with him, cupping him against a tall chest. The rushing sound of the ocean filled Sam’s ears once more. The sound of his brother’s immense breaths, moving through lungs that now dwarfed all of Sam. He shuddered again as he let himself cower into the safety Dean provided simply by being there.

“Dean, what happened? What’s gonna happen to me?”

(Part 1 of 4)

Dean growled, trying to get free of the wall. “You bitch,” he spat angrily. “What did you do to him?!”

The witch smirked, her long, lustrous blonde hair wafting in the air as the spell she’d hit Sam with started to die down. “You’ll soon find out,” she said with the deadly hiss of a promise. “I’m going to enjoy this.”

Her chanting started again. Struggling, Dean’s eyes went wide as her hand, clawed around the air, lifted up in preparation to hit him.

Before she could get the blast off, someone slammed against the door. It shuddered. John Winchester’s voice could be heard outside the door. “I’m coming boys!”

“Damn,” the witch snarled. “Better make this quick.” She held up the hand again, preparing the spell.

The door shattered. John barreled in, tackling the witch without taking a breath. He slammed into her, knocking her away from Dean with a shriek.

Dean hit the ground, falling straight down from where he’d been pinned up over three feet in the air. He moaned, certain he’d broken something.

The groan tapered off when his eyes landed on something right next to the battling hunter and the witch. Something small, in familiar colors. Dean almost gasped.

Sammy!

He crawled over to the prostrate from. His brother was less than four inches tall, curled up in a tiny ball and shuddering in pain. Sam’s shudders increased as Dean lifted him off of the ground. Or maybe it was his hands that were shaking.

Dean was yanked off his feet without warning, John shoving him out of the door. His fingers curled protectively around his brother. “D-dad…” he stuttered. He had no idea what to do.

“Get in the car, Dean!”

A gunshot sounded out. A shrieking laugh was heard. The witch vanished before the bullet hit her. John held the gun in front of him as he backed away.

Dean got into the front seat of the Impala, holding his tiny brother against his chest. Sam had gone motionless, slumped across his fingers. “It’s okay, Sammy. I gotcha,” he whispered even as John dove into the driver’s seat and started it up. The car screeched out of the parking lot.

“Everything will be okay, Sam. I promise.”

Timeline: During the two month stay at the motel while Sam’s arm heals

(Part 2 of 2)

Sean caught one last glimpse of Walt as the floor dropped away, the older man turning back towards the wall to go finish the work he’d left behind to get them safely out to Dean.

Walt and Christian had recently taken down a rat in the bowels of the motel. Currently, Christian was up to his elbows getting the meat jerkied before it spoilt, and Walt was tanning the hide. With that much hide to spare, he’d be able to get some new shoes made for the refugees Dean had rescued, a welcome item after losing their homes and most of their belongings. He’d already put some of his other stored hides to use making Kara a new bag to replace her small one.

Any train of thought on Sean’s mind vanished as Dean took his first step, clearing a vast amount of distance so easily. Sean clutched closer to Bree, eyes darting around in amazement at his surroundings.

Dean’s massive chest took up half of his world. The hand they were on was kept braced against that warm flannel wall, giving the passengers a solid wall to lean against if they needed it. Dean’s second hand hovered nearby, ready to catch anyone that fell or slipped off. Not that any of them would venture near the edge. Even Kara was wary of the height.

Down below, the motel room stretched away. Held this high up, the three of them were close to Sean’s original height, giving him a nostalgic air as he glanced around. His eyes shone at the memories, but there was no sadness in him.

He had a family, and they cared for him. What more did he need?

Their destination came into view after Dean turned. A huge pillow was set up in front of an expansive laptop, waiting patiently for them. Sam, already settled in the center with his broken arm still in the makeshift sling, waved at them.

“You’re holding up the movie, slowpokes!” he hollered across the distance.

Above them all, Dean snorted in amusement. A gust of air hit his hand, making Sean tighten his hold on Bree further as his hair was tousled by the giant’s breath.

“Not everyone gets the luxury of handicapped parking, pint-size. You’ll survive a few extra minutes of waiting.” The deep voice, heard from so close, was the equivalent of the rumbles of an earthquake as it shifted the tectonic plates. Even the firm hand supporting them trembled a little at the sound.

Soon enough, they were lowered to the pillow. Kara bounced off eagerly, only to fall in a pile when the plushy ground gave way underneath her feet. As Bree helped Sean off at a more sedate pace, Dean’s other hand came over, plucking Kara off the pillow and settling her squirming form right next to Sam.

While they all found their own seat on the pillow with Sam and Bree flanking the kids, Dean grabbed the popcorn and soda (and bonus Raisinets) from the table. Everyone got their very own buttery kernel, raisinet, and a bottlecap of soda (with a strict warning from Dean to let the bubbles settle; they’d learned their lesson the first time Sam had tried soda while small). Dean started up the movie with a resounding click on his laptop, his arm briefly stretching over the four small watchers on the pillow.

Thumbelina began to run on the 15" laptop screen, casting the four small viewers into their own version of a movie theater. The movie completely enthralled the girls and eventually even caught Sean’s attention. Sam and Dean shared a smile behind everyone’s backs, glad their choice had panned out. It wasn’t a movie either of them would ever have watched on their own, but considering that their family would never have the chance to do a movie night like this without Dean around, pride had been pushed aside.

As Thumbelina was being captured by Ms. Toad, Bree and Kara both clutched each other fearfully. Dean ended up stretched out behind the pillow with his arm curled protectively around it. The girls huddled between his index finger and thumb, staying in the warm cave his hand created for comfort and safety. He leaned his head on his arm, listening to Sam compare Sean to Prince Cornelius.

With his family happy and protected and completely trusting of him, Dean smiled, letting himself relax.

Not this time, but I guarantee you will not be disappointed by another prompt I have! Ant Man may appear soon on the page 😉

In this one, it’s based only a year after the show started, so Ant Man isn’t even a gleam in the director’s eye. Though the boys certainly would have enjoyed Ant Man more than most of the movies they thought about for this little night.

Anyone else before it posts tomorrow morning?

Hi! So I absolutely adore your story and I wanted to try my hand at making a gif of the Winchesters, so here’s my first ever attempt a gif. It was kind of hard to find a good image of Sam to make him really look like tiny!sam, but maybe I’ll come across one in the future. Anyway, thanks so much for writing such an awesome story!

I love everything about it x3 This was the best thing to wake up this morning, I just wish I hadn’t been stuck at work all day so I could get it posted. You did an amazing job with tiny!Sam, and this is fantastic for a first try. Thanks so much!

Those are both such great movies, but not what Sam and Dean picked out this time (yep, they let the boys pick since none of them had any idea about what movies existed). They’ll have to have a few movie nights while Sam’s recovering, especially since their family can’t watch a movie without Dean around. Wizard of Oz for sure, such a classic. Imagine their faces if they see how big the Iron giant is compared to humans! @.@

Any other guesses for what’ll be playing on movie night?

Timeline: During the two month stay at the motel while Sam’s arm heals

(Part 1 of 2)

“Are you sure the two of you can handle this?” Walt asked gruffly, musing Kara’s hair up while she waited next to him, bouncing up and down in unrestrained excitement for the night ahead.

Bree rolled her bright blue eyes. “Dad, of course we can handle this! I’ll keep an eye on the kids, and Sam will keep an eye on Dean! See? No problem.”

Before Walt could argue with her further, she silenced him with a quick kiss on the cheek. “Don’t worry, dad. Everything will be fine. Just enjoy the night off, alright?”

A shadow fell over the small family waiting near the dresser as Dean thudded over. “Sounds like you don’t trust me!” he declared jokingly as he knelt down next to them. “I’ll keep them all out of trouble, don’t you worry.”

Sean gave a gasp of fear at the sheer size of Dean looming directly overhead. He ducked behind Walt, putting his adopted father between him and the giant. A little flash of hurt flickered in Dean’s eyes before he expertly covered it up. As small as they were, Walt and Kara noticed immediately.

Kara peeked around Walt, her big grey eyes worried for her new friend. “It’s okay!” she promised loyally. “He’s really nice! And careful, and he always has yummy food!” She grabbed the older boy’s wrist, hopefully tugging at it. “Dean’s my friend, just like you!”

Sean begrudgingly let her lead him out, staring wide-eyed up at Dean.

Dean gave a friendly wave. “Hey there, champ,” he said. “Ready for the movie?”

“Y-yeah,” Sean managed hesitantly, gulping down his nerves. Walt put a hand on his shoulder, squeezing it for support. Considering Sean had only lived at his new size for under a year, he was doing really good around a human.

Dean gave him a smile, then stretched his hand out next to the small gathering. “Your chariot awaits, m’lady,” he said to Bree.

Bree grinned brightly at the old-fashioned phrasing. “Okay, c’mon guys! Dad needs to get back to his work!” She ushered the kids over to the massive palm, ignoring the steady pulse that throbbed beneath their soft-soled shoes as they stepped on. It served as a continuous reminder that they were actually standing in the hand of a massive hunter, completely in his control.

And trusting him willingly with their lives. A trust he’d earned.

Sean was the last to join them on the living platform, staring hesitantly at the massive fingers that stretched away, curling up at the end. A slight twitch in Dean’s pinkie made him jump, then Bree’s calm hand was on his shoulder.

She smiled understandingly at him as he glanced up at her. “I know he’s big,” she said in a soft voice that Dean wouldn’t be able to hear. “But he saved your life before, just like he saved mine and Sam’s. So you shouldn’t hold his size against him, alright?”

Sean nodded back, his mouth dry. He let her lift him into her arms as she stepped to the center of the palm. With everyone on, the fingers curled up around them in preparation to soar into the air.

Bree buried her head against Sean’s neck in a stage whisper, making him giggle at the way the words tickled. “Now, give him the signal for me, okay? My hands are a little full.”

Laughter tapering off, Sean lifted up his hand in a thumbs-up at Dean, smiling at the expansive face above them. His hand quickly went back to clutching her neck as Dean started to stand, the three of them lifted up into the air as though they weighed nothing.

Of course, compared to Dean they didn’t.

Breaking in His New Journal

The early morning sun found Sam perched on the nightstand, legs dangling off the edge as he watched a news report from a state away. The shower ran in the background, filling the air with the reassuring patter of water. It washed away the disturbing silence that never failed to unnerve Sam after his recent abduction. The tiny scrapings of a lockpick in the door continually sounded in his head when he was left on his own. Like now.

On the television, a helicopter cam panned over the landscape, showing the destroyed half of a town, crumpled wreckage everywhere.

Confusion runs rampant as the town has been declared unsafe for habitation. The earthquake last week coincides with the tornado yesterday down to the exact date and time, spreading rumors of a town-wide curse that afflicts it all. All superstitious notions aside, evacuation procedures are being followed by the mayor.”

Sam frowned to himself as he contemplated the report. Two natural disasters, spaced apart by exactly seven days, down to the second? “Definitely not natural,” he muttered under his breath.

He brushed a hand over the new journal sitting on his lap, loving the leather covering on it. There was still room in his older journal, but he was eager to break in the new one. The pages were even gold leafed, giving the small book a professional feel.

He opened it to the first page. While Dean was in the shower, Sam filled in his name, claiming the book as his own in delicate handwriting that humans couldn’t read without a magnifying glass to help. Sam Winchester. After a moment of hesitation, at the bottom of the page, in bold lettering, he put If lost, return to Dean Winchester, figuring it couldn’t hurt to have a back-up plan in place if it ever got lost.

No one knew who Sam Winchester was, after all.
