Shadows and Reflections; AKA ‘that time nightmares wrote a story while drunk’

You read it right. That story was completely written while @nightmares06 was visiting family for Thanksgiving, was given an entire bottle of champagne, and didn’t move from the couch for the entire day. After which, she ended up with a story written based on her fear of being followed at work.

Later on, there was a realization that the ‘footsteps’ heard in the work stairwell all the time were caused by the creak of a door, so it was a happy ending on all fronts.

Walt Watch

From forgettable side character to a series staple

image

Walt Watch, the person who dared to venture into a room where John Winchester was fighting a witch, all to save one very small child.

Suffice to say, without Walt, Sam wouldn’t have made it far in his new life. As a small, cursed child, he needed someone to teach him survival at his new size. Walt and Mallory became his adopted parents, and sheltered him from a world that had changed in more ways than one.

In a way, Walt is one of the luckiest characters. During the first Brothers Apart story, he was originally slated to die when Mallory was killed. The reason he came back in the end was when I was reading over the story and realized that it was never implicitly stated that he died.

Therefore, the door was open for one of the most shocking returns for Sam, who was convinced he was looking at a ghost when Walt was waiting for him in the walls of Trails West.

The creation of an antagonist

You’re mine. And you always will be.

Celeste, also known as Saraqael, the Watcher. She has long fallen from the grace of heaven and spends her days in disguise as a witch. With the powers of an archangel backed by the magic of a witch, she manages to foil the Winchesters at every turn. Perhaps now that they know what she truly is, they will be able to find a way to defeat her, once and for all.

When Brothers Apart was first written, Celeste was as much of a mystery to myself as she was to anyone. She wanted to be something more than any old witch, but what?

An archdemon? These exist in myths but the closest Supernatural has come to this lore is the Princes of hell, also known as the yellow-eyed demons. A fallen angel? This was far more alluring, and fit her character arc much better. When Brothers Consulted began, @nightmares06 was at last able to write her origin story, which begins in a forgotten town in the old British wilds.

There is no longer any record of that town existing, and as far as the world is concerned, they were wiped off the map. Yet the townsfolk survived, and they have made their mark on this story in ways that are yet to be seen in the stories, especially in the form of one Adriana Dena Coilltean (pronounced call-ten, thank you very much), also known as Adriana of the woods. Her legacy as the true witch of that village lives on in her descendants.

The origin of Brothers Apart

Sam was hit with a witch’s curse when he was 10 and Dean was 14. Unable to find him or his attacker anywhere when the dust settled, John and Dean Winchester were eventually forced to give him up for dead. Unbeknownst to them, Sam was saved from the witch and adopted into a new family, and they’ve trained him to take care of himself as best he can in the world, and protected him from the witch’s gaze all these years. And someone very familiar will be staying at the motel he lives in, all unknowing. This sets off a chain of events that changes Sam’s life forever.

Brothers Apart started in 2014, and it was initially only going to be a single story arc, ending with Sam and Dean reunited and Sam’s curse broken. This changed when I made the discovery that Archive of Our Own actually allows writers to post stories as a part of a series, instead of the way Fanfiction and Deviantart make you post by story or by page.

This was the first moment where I realized that Brothers Apart didn’t have to end. It could… keep going, and suddenly I was full of ideas for follow-up stories and sequels, and we all know that it continued to develop from there!

A full list of the Brothers Apart storyline can be found at bamultiverse.com, and a full breakdown of all AUs can be found at deviantart.com

Stay tuned for more information about the stories during our 5th anniversary, including a few small peeks at the future! If you have any questions or ideas at all, be sure to send them in! We’re open for asks, submissions and prompts!

For anyone not caught up on the series, beware of possible spoilers!

And the winning story, with 47 out of the 73 votes received, is…

Clash of the Hunters!

Returning to the idyllic Wellwood Forest after his trials feels like a blessing for Jacob Andris while he’s struggling with the trauma from a past case.

Yet this peace won’t last as the quiet in the forest is shattered with the entrance of a new hunter on the scene, one who’s nothing like the Dean Winchester that saved Jacob’s life before…

We return to Brothers Found in the aftermath from the horror story just in time for a visit from the infamous Logan Guthrie, a hunter that appears in Bowman of Wellwood!

Sneak peek:

The second Jacob’s hands were on the cage, Dean was on the move.

As dangerous as it was to attack with Sam still in the line of fire, there would be no better chance. The hunter had lost his gun. Jacob was free and had his hands on the cage containing the sprite, reducing the chances of collateral damage of a fight between the older hunters.

Sam knew the risks as well as Dean.

So while Jacob was backing off from the hunter with Bowman safe, Dean was already sprinting through the field. Long legs covered the ground that had taken Sam a half hour to cross in seconds. His boots dug fissures in the ground with the force of striking the ground, all to propel him towards his enemy. It was enough that if any of the sprites were in his way, there would be nothing left of them.

But they knew when to keep clear and when to attack. Scar was a good leader, and would see his opening just as Dean had found his.

The hunter hadn’t fully turned in Dean’s direction when there was suddenly a fist slamming into his jaw. Dean didn’t waste a second in his attack. The man was thrown backwards from the force, and his pocket slammed away with him. Only a passing guilt hit at the fact that Sam was about to be in the center of two dueling humans. He would do what he could to keep Sam safe, even during the deadly fight.

It was for this reason that he didn’t use his knife right off the bat. Instead of a vicious follow-up, Dean’s hands sealed around the other hunter’s wrist, preventing him from falling at the same time as he prevented a counterattack. Either could be disastrous for Sam.

“You think you can come in here and terrify a bunch of peaceful sprites?” Dean snarled. “Threaten to cut their wings off and trap them in cages? This forest is under my protection.”

A flurry of leaves blew up around them as the wind kicked up.

“Mine. And theirs.”

In the past of Brothers Kept…

anonymous  asked:

Given that you said borrowers had been made into pets since the 1950s in Brothers Kept, something tells me that it would all be Arrietty Clock’s fault for all the borrowers’ sucky situation in either needing to hide better or getting put into cages.

Oh, I’m absolutely certain Arriety had something to do with the state of this AU! She’s got just as much bad luck as any of the boys we have in it now, and hated what became of her people after the incident.

Perhaps one day someone can right the wrongs of this universe, but for now they struggle to even understand each other’s point of view.

Trickster shenanigans

From: Anon

Comment: What kind of shenanigans do you think would rain down on our boys if they had a run in with the trickster? Hopefully nothing as morbid as the mystery spot!a

But I have fun imagining Dean being made into something smaller than normal – like getting turned into a child again, the age he was when Sam was cursed to get like “a second chance” that’s all fucked up because Dean as a child won’t be able to drive or pay for the motel rooms or anything. Or maybe turning into like a raccoon or something (those tiny hands!) where he has to struggle to convince sam that he’s not a feral animal while being severely hindered in the communication department. Anyway, if he was smaller than normal but still big to Sam so we could see like a different size dynamic idk.

Love you and all that you do!

Aww, thank you so much! It means everything for us to hear that you love our stories!

The trickster is certainly getting up to shenanigans in the BA multiverses, and though I can’t guarantee he’ll ever appear in the original BA, he’s already shown his face in Brothers Found, in the epic tale of Jacob in Wonderland, and he’s also planned to show up in other stories, with various plans in mind.

There have been a few fanfictions written that have the trickster in them, so they’re always worth checking out- Not a Game by @arc852, and The Dragon at Knights Inn by @wolfie180g. (For a full list of the fanfictions written for BA, check out here, and if you know one that isn’t on the list, message @nightmares06!)

Age fics are always cute, and it would be interesting to see Sam with a scrawny teenaged Dean! Dean would be pretty upset (if he still has his memories) that he’s now too young to buy any beer.

As for animals, I generally don’t do animal transformations, but I recommend checking out @wolfie180g‘s stuff! They have a lot of this, and they also do a lot of g/t oriented stories with Sam and Dean.
