“Dumbass,” Jacob agreed with a sleepy grin. While Dean copied the license plate and navigated to a page where he could track it, Jacob shifted where he sat. He lay down slowly on his back, his head still angled towards the screen as Dean worked. The computer was so huge that Jacob never risked missing much; the internet browser might as well be the horizon.

Exhaustion settled over him like a blanket while warmth radiated up from the computer below. Jacob had been through far too much for one person in the last several days. It was hard to truly get any rest when everything loomed overhead and every shadow promised some kind of threat. In plain view of Dean and surrounded by protective hands … Jacob felt a little safer. Everything still loomed and the shadows still threatened. but at least he knew he didn’t need to be afraid of Dean.

The exhaustion combined with his sense of momentary safety and Jacob fell asleep right there on the laptop, heavy eyelids fluttering closed. His hands rested idly on his stomach until he rolled over on his side in his slumber.

Dean caught sight of the movement down below. A warm smile appeared on his face at the sight of Jacob curling up to sleep. He certainly deserved the rest, after what he’d been through. Dean would make damn certain that nothing happened to him on the laptop. Seeing that Jacob was trusting him like that so freely, Dean felt the weight of his responsibility settle over his shoulders.

I’m rather behind on the current story, due to a combination of “life is busy and a bit exhausting” and “reading scary stories in chunks is easier if I can choose where the chunks end and don’t have to stop at a cliffhanger, so I’m erring on the side of caution and waiting til there’s a bunch of chapters up to read,” but I wanted to pop in and tell you that it’s really well written and full of all the emotions. And wee Jacob in the excerpts is just so cute sometimes.

Sounds like you have a lot of fun coming once you get the chance to read the horror story! We can’t wait to hear what you think.

Wee Jacob is definitely one of the sweetest lil guys around. Everyone just wants to eat ‘em right up.

April 19th excerpt:

Dean’s pocket was taller than Oscar, but for a kid who grew up knowing how to climb, that was more of an inconvenience than a hindrance. He hoisted himself to his feet, and then some. Hand over hand, Oscar pulled himself up to the edge of the pocket with a heavy heartbeat cheering him on just inches away.

The pocket flap gave him trouble. Oscar reached the top edge and clung to it with one hand. The other pushed against the flap awkwardly, letting in sporadic bursts of outside light before it fumbled back into place.

What would have happened if, instead of Dean, John Winchester had found little Sam?

If we’re talking about when they were kids, he would have handed the tiny Sam over to Dean because he was too busy keeping them alive, and Dean would have still ended up as the one that watched over Sam until he woke up.

If we’re talking about when they’re older, probably some vase time, some grilling. But since it is Sam’s dad, and John changed less over the years compared to Dean, it’s likely Sam would have recognized him right off the bat. Cue some arguing and both snapping at each other until John realizes it really is Sam.

Unlike John, Dean wouldn’t be ignoring any phone calls from John about finding Sam again. He’d be there in a heartbeat, suspicious and hopeful at his core.

April 18th excerpt:

For all appearances, the man and his son could be on a family road trip through the scenic mountains together. Nothing out of the ordinary. Rock filtered out of the speakers, bands unaware of the very odd trio they played for.

It wasn’t the man and his son on their own that made the group odd, despite the stories they carried with them. The third passenger was barely two inches tall, and hidden away in a pocket.

April 17th except:

The toy truck next to him almost jumped as Jacob’s dad made his way over to the couch, each footstep like a small-scale earthquake as it landed on the ground. Sam choked back a cry of alarm, stumbling away from the ‘small’ toy that outsized him.

I too love the excerpts. I also really like the excerpt redux, and would not at all mind eventually seeing three or four past excerpts in a day that are from the past couple years.

Thank youuu!

It’s something I really want to do, but I don’t have the time to queue them up these days. So without extra help on the blog, we probably won’t be able to go further back in time with the excerpts for now.

Brothers Keeper by @wolfie180g || wolfie180g

Sam and Dean spent half their lives fighting for survival in a world that outsizes them at every turn. They were hit by a witch’s curse when they were just children and left abandoned by a father that didn’t know they survived the attack. They learned to cope with their new diminutive height and make a home inside the walls, and under the floorboards of the motel they were stranded in. At about 4 inches tall, even a normal trip searching for food ends up with them coming across a new danger that they’d never seen before. Some kind of elongated rat of an animal that could easily make a meal out of them both, had spotted them and chased after them inside the motel room walls to a room they’ve never been in before.

What they find in that room is almost as terrifying as the strange animal that pursues them. A gigantic human that appears to be the animal’s owner, who is all too happy to let it inside. The brothers must find a way to escape before they’re seen and captured by the human to be taken away as pets, or worse, attacked and eaten by the fanged animal.

With no easy way out, they must pick the lesser of the far too many evils.
