( Deviantart, Fanfiction, Archive of our Own ) It will update from then on every Monday after. Below is a sneak peek from that first chapter:

Is it a mouse?

Dean didn’t want to risk having any unknown animals darting around the room. He slipped quietly off the bed, creeping over towards the wall. He ignored a curious question shot his way from Sam, who was finally taking note of his older brother’s odd behavior.

“Gimme a sec,” Dean muttered over his shoulder.

He saw the movement again, and lunged forward. Two hands slammed around the small animal, trapping it between them. The show was completely forgotten as Dean stood back up, eyes wide as he stared down at his hands.

Did I see what I thought I saw?

“What is it, Dean?” Sam asked, taking a few hesitant steps forward on the uneven surface of the bed.

Just as curious as Sam, Dean cracked open his hands so he could peek inside at what he’d caught. He sucked in a gasp of surprise and slammed them shut, staring back at Sam in dismay.

It was a kid even smaller than Sammy.

Who did Dean just catch? Find out on Monday!

This story will take place a little over a month after Sam is initially cursed, and two weeks after Sam first hitches himself a ride in Dean’s pocket to school. So, they are starting to get used to him being tiny, but there’s a lot he’s not prepared for. He’ll need a teacher.

Waking Dean

Timeline: Future Story

“C’mon Dean,” Sam gritted out, determined. “You need to wake up.” Giving up on the easy way, Sam kicked the cheek he was standing next to. A few more kicks to the cheek and one directed at the nose and he heard a rumbling from Dean as his brother finally started to wake up.

The next part happened too fast for Sam to react.

He’d always known Dean’s reflexes were sharp – after all, Dean had been able to catch Sam without even seeing him the first time they’d met back up not so long ago. A lifetime of hunting dangerous creatures does that to a person.

But he had no idea they were just as sharp asleep.

The second Dean’s eyes slotted open, he moved. The hand that came for Sam was lightning quick, to fast and too big for him to dodge out of the way in time. He had no choice but to curl up into a ball as he was helplessly scooped up off the bed by Dean’s thick fingers. He pulled his arms and legs in as close as he could to his body so they wouldn’t get snapped when the fingers closed tightly around him.

The huge silver ring his brother wore dug uncomfortably into his shoulder the way he was held. Sam tried his best to not squirm, afraid the movement might make Dean tighten the fist around him even more before he was fully awake and found out it was Sam he was holding. He was strong enough to crush Sam by accident if he wasn’t careful.

The whole world flipped around Sam as Dean moved, disorienting him and making his headache beat out a staccato tempo inside his skull. Sam groaned, trying to move enough to free his arm so he could rub his head and hopefully take away some of the pressure. No matter what he did, both his arms remained pinned to his side, held there by Dean’s solid grip. He could feel the hand moving, raising higher into the air as Sam’s stomach clenched with vertigo, unable to see where he was going. You would think he’d be used to this after spending the last few months with Dean, but no. Still nauseating, especially since he couldn’t see where he was being lifted to.

“Sammy?” His brother’s voice, groggy from sleep, filled the air around Sam. “Isat’chu?”

The tight grip around him loosened as Dean finally realized what he had clenched in his fist. Relieved, Sam relaxed from his huddled ball of limbs as the slightly sweaty palm under him tilted, rolling him onto his back so he was facing Dean’s worried face, bare inches away.

“Sam? What the hell are you doing? Are you alright?” A huge finger approached from the side, gently propping Sam up.

Sam rubbed his head, trying to focus his thoughts back from being discombobulated and scrambled. He wrapped an arm around the finger, using it to keep his balance while his head was still spinning.

Noticing this, Dean leaned even closer. “Shit Sam, did I hurt you?”

Sam waved Dean away, unable to meet the magnified worry in the green eyes he was suspended in front of. “I’m fine, just a little shaken.” He rubbed his head again. “Wasn’t really expecting to go for a ride just trying to wake you up.”

Sam’s family likely wouldn’t be around if something like this went down. As things are, they aren’t leaving the motel anytime soon. Out there, it’s hard to find safety. They’d have to rely completely on Dean or Bobby, and that’s a hard thing to do. Handing their safety, and the safety of their family over to a human isn’t an easy choice to make.

Sam may indeed find out his true height in Brothers Apart…

Timeline: After The Schism of Fire and Water

( Part 4 of 4 )

The sound of stumbling came from behind Dean, and he whipped around, catching the man behind him in shock.

“Sam?!”

The person he held in his arms only bore a passing resemblance to the four inch hunter he’d had at his side, flinching away from Dean’s voice. Sam was massive and built, a good few inches taller than Dean himself. But those hazel eyes, despite the way they darted about in a panic, were the most familiar eyes he’d ever seen. His hair was a mess, ragged and longer than ever. His clothing was tattered. A massive hook hung out of his satchel, the three prongs glinting in the sunlight and the clear fishing line the thickness of Dean’s pinkie.

All so familiar, yet at the same time so strange. That hook could now spear a man straight through.

“Dean?”

The voice sounded unused, hoarse. Sam’s hazel eyes tried to focus on Dean, like he didn’t believe what he was seeing. He tried desperately to pull away from the older, but now smaller hunter, but didn’t get far. There was a quivering in his limbs, a weakness that hadn’t been present before.

“Here, c’mon pint-size,” Dean said softly. He guided his brother over to the Impala, sitting him carefully down in the passenger’s side. “Drink,” he commanded, holding a water bottle up to Sam’s lips.

The younger brother let Dean give him a drink. His jacket was removed, and his satchel tossed in the back next to Dean’s duffel. Dean brushed the scattered hair out of his eyes.

“H-how?” Sam managed to croak out. “I thought… I thought you couldn’t find me. I could always hear you searching… but I just… I just kept getting smaller.

A part of Dean froze up at that confirmation of his fears. “How small?”

Sam shook his head desperately. “No idea. I just… things kept changing. I couldn’t even focus on things after awhile.” His blinking hazel eyes forced themselves to focus on Dean. “Subatomic… too small… your voice…”

Dean wet one of the handkerchiefs in his duffel, and patted it against Sam’s face, clearing off the grime and sweat that had caked up after months on his own. “I’m here now, and I’m not going anywhere.” He forced out a fake smile, remembering the year of life he had left.

“You and me together, Sasquatch.”

Announcement

In line with there being a full-fledged story in development for the Dean Rescues Sam AU, I’m also renaming it Brothers Together after a friend suggested it. If you have any asks/prompts for the AU, feel free to submit them. They may possibly be incorporated into the story in development. Standard prompt rules apply.

Also, AO3’s story set up will be adjusted to have this as a separate series.
