Actually, the only Jacob in the Brothers Apart stories/AU’s that is from the timeline where he met up with Bowman will be the Jacob that will appear in Brothers Apart itself in a future story. Otherwise, each time you see Jacob Andris appear, it is a different Jacob who took a different path… just like how Sam and Dean are different in each one.

I think Dean might have a much easier time with Jacob if the teenager had already encountered a certain sassy sprite. These two will be butting heads right from the get-go!

“Why do you think I did it?” Dean growled at the human, his voice bouncing off the curved wall of glass he was stuck behind. He pointed up at the ceiling he couldn’t reach. “The next time I stick you in a coffee pot like the morning brew, we’ll let you make the decisions.” He crossed his arms, prepared to do what it took to outlast the human. He’d never give away the others, and he was prepared to deal with the consequences for that decision.

Jacob’s eyebrows shot up yet again. He had to wonder where the little guy was keeping all that sass stored up, because it didn’t look like it’d fit in his tiny frame. He pondered the snarky words while the little hands brushed at those tiny clothes. Every movement was so familiar, but in such a small miniature that Jacob could almost miss it if he wasn’t looking right at the little guy.

“Come on, man, I already said I’d letcha out. No need to make such a big deal out of it when you’re the one who was sneaking around in my room,” he pointed out. “What were you-” he started to ask, but his eyes flitted to the white styrofoam takeout box still resting on the table.

Brothers Asunder Sneak Peek

You’ll never see your brother again… this time I’ll make sure of it.

An owl hooted in the cool night air.

Tears ran grimy streaks down Sam’s cheeks. He huddled against the trunk of a tree, trying to hide as far back in the shadows as he could. The silence was only broken by the occasional sob.

Every shadow that crossed his line of sight sent a jagged spike of icy fear up his back. Leaves wafted in an invisible breeze, an idyllic, innocent scene rendered foreboding by his current circumstances.

He didn’t know exactly how big he was, but he definitely wasn’t the size he’d been before the attack.

A leaf fluttered down from the canopy above. It landed next to Sam, rustling gently in the air. The leaf alone was broad enough to block him from sight.

Young shoots of grass poking up out of the dirt were taller than he was.

With shaking, hesitant hands, Sam gripped the edge of the leaf tight and pulled it close. A cry hiccuped in his chest.

The green leaf formed a canopy of his own over his head. Sam scrunched back against the thick bark, using his leaf as a makeshift tent to hide from the sight of any nearby predators. A strident breeze tried to pull it from his grasp, but he persevered. White knuckles clenched tight.

Those animals lurking out in the forest were huge. He couldn’t even risk getting up to see where he was.

The owl hooted its call across the branches once more and Sam shut his eyes.

Dean, where are you?

Brothers Asunder is the story where Sam is adopted by the sprites, separated from Dean by more than just his size. Now, Dean has no idea where Sam is, how big he is, and no idea he survived the witch’s attack. Only the future will tell if Celeste’s plan to separate them at last will work!

February 18th excerpt:

Dean scooped up the wires and pins into his arms and started to pack them away into his duffel. “No, I think you’re good. This is more than I asked for. I might have to start hiding the pins from Sam soon, he might throw them at me if he has to sit around much longer.”

Jacob snickered at the image of Sam tossing around pins the size of small daggers to him. They would be like slightly bulky throwing knives. “Maybe,” Jacob agreed, raising an eyebrow appraisingly at the pins as Dean stashed them away.

January 27th excerpt:

“We lived on the road,” Sam said, his ears still slightly red. Hopefully the two humans were too big to notice. “Dad took us from case to case after our mother was killed. Vengeful spirits, poltergeists, werewolves…” He trailed off.

“Witches,” Dean finished, remembering their last fateful case. “And cursed objects. People write strange deaths and disappearances off but there’s always a reason for them. People don’t just die and fade away.”

“Other people just stop looking,” Sam said sadly, picking up the train of thought. Dean wasn’t the only one that wished he could keep others from going through the same hell as they had.

January 26th excerpt:

Dean was exasperated, still rambling about the dog. “He’s the size of a freakin’ house! At least when Sam brought home a mouse, it couldn’t try and eat me!”

Sam snorted at him, rolling his eyes. “Dean. He’s not going to do anything.”

“You keep telling yourself that,” Dean said, one hand clutching the fabric behind them, “and I’ll be up high. Where it’s safer.”

January 25th excerpt:

With a careful finger, Bobby nudged Dean in the side to check if he was hiding any injuries the way John was prone to do. Dean had always tried to be more like his father, no matter how different they were in reality. Sam wouldn’t get away with hiding any injuries at all with his older brother around, so at least he could rest easy on that front.

Dean tried to bat the hand away. “Watch it! You’ll ruin the leather!” he complained.

Sneak Peek!

In celebration of reaching ten stories for Brothers Apart, this story is a special edition. It brings in a new set of characters that I’m very excited for everyone to welcome into the BA universe!

A Lich of Sense arrives officially on December 11th.

Over the last hour, Dean’s movements had become more sluggish, his snark slowing down compared to normal. Sam could feel a pang of fear whenever he caught sight of Dean’s arm. His brother had tied a tourniquet to slow the bleeding while they were walking, but the red stain had continued to spread.

Dean was weakening, and there was nothing he could do.

“Dean, how–” Sam’s query was cut short when the massive hunter suddenly dropped down, going to a sit with his legs crossed. He leaned back against a tree, closing his eyes to the silence of the forest.

It took Sam a few moments to recover, shoulders slightly shaking from the terror of the ground dropping out from under him. It gave the effect of being trapped in free-fall, with no seatbelt to secure him in place. Dean had never done anything like that without warning, or making sure Sam was secure.

“Dean, you alright?” Sam asked worriedly once he caught his breath again. The huge hunter was paler than normal, his lips a brighter pink against the whitened skin.

A green eye cracked open, searching out Sam. “Yeah, Sammy. I’ll be okay. Just… gotta rest for a bit…”

Worry spiked in Sam even more. It wasn’t like Dean to just rest like this… not on a case… and with his injury beyond Sam’s ability to handle, Sam couldn’t risk Dean dropping off into a deep sleep. Most of the time, Dean was an extraordinarily light sleeper, waking at the smallest noises around him (like Sam, arguing with his father by Dean’s laptop that first time they’d met up again), but other times nothing could budge him, come hell or high water.

Standing precariously on his perch, Sam shoved roughly against Dean’s cheek. It was clammy to the touch, ratcheting Sam’s worry up another notch. “C’mon, Godzilla. No falling asleep. You have townspeople to terrify.”

This elicited a grumble from the hunter, but nothing more. Thankful that Dean was still responsive, Sam started to climb down the long sleeve to where Dean’s hands were folded on his lap.

He had an idea.

Announcement

In line with there being a full-fledged story in development for the Dean Rescues Sam AU, I’m also renaming it Brothers Together after a friend suggested it. If you have any asks/prompts for the AU, feel free to submit them. They may possibly be incorporated into the story in development. Standard prompt rules apply.

Also, AO3’s story set up will be adjusted to have this as a separate series.
