October 30th excerpt:

Stan kept a steady hand on Juno to make sure she didn’t get too close to Dean. He could plainly see how nervous the little guy was, and he glanced between Dean and Nate, still trying to figure out what his fiance was trying to tell him. Nate gave a small nod toward the borrower in his hand, indicating that Stan should pay attention, so that’s where Stan’s focus went.

“Easy, girl,” Stan soothed. Juno was a little sluggish from her meal, but he couldn’t risk her getting overexcited around someone so small. The German Shepherd was curious and resisted his grip, lurching forward just enough so that her nose grazed Dean’s tiny hand before Nathan could draw back out of her reach.

Just saw the AoL snippet, and it made me remember that I had meant to send in an ask about if wee Stan considered the brothers his owners. Guess that answers that!

It’s a definite misconception between Stan and the Winchesters!

He doesn’t quite see himself the way they want him to…

It took seconds for Stan to grab the clip near the top of the pen and haul it all the way back to Sam, panting a little from the effort as he stepped back to give the human room to take it.

Sam was frozen in his search, not having expected Stan to suddenly shoot off in a different direction while they conversed. Seeing how much effort it took Stan to drag the pen over to him drove into Sam how different they were in size, making him feel obnoxiously oversized all over again.

Dean had an identical look on his face, not knowing how to react.

“S-Stan,” Sam managed to get out, delicately picking up the pen. He’d been looking for one, but– “You can just… tell me where the pen is, okay? You don’t have to go through all that work, I can just grab it.”

The ghost of a proud smile that had found its way to Stan’s features for finally making himself of use melted when he saw Sam’s reaction. Now he was confused all over again, worried that he’d done something wrong.

“But… you wanted it…” Stan trailed off awkwardly, trying to think of a way to fix it. But there was nothing to fix. The pen was fetched, Sam already had it. He didn’t understand why the brothers seemed so averse to his actions, but he resolved to do better next time as soon as he found out.

“That’s… not what I’m saying…” Sam said, his conviction fading at Stan’s reaction. “Just… If I want something, you don’t have to get it for me.” It was so hard to come up with words for what he meant. “I don’t want you straining yourself.”

“You’re not a pet,” Dean interrupted, putting it far blunter than Sam would have done. “You know that… right?”

October 19th excerpt:

When he turned to ask Dean what it was, he stiffened again. It took Stan a few blinks for it to sink in that Dean had fallen asleep.

A sense of uncertainty washed over Stan at this realization. Not only was he now unsupervised, but he was in a completely unknown place where anything could happen to him while Dean was sleeping.

October 18th excerpt:

Tucking his arms close, Dean let himself relax against the trunk of the tree. Now that he was away from the bustle of the small town they were staying in, too far off to hear the cars thunder down the street or any other sounds of humanity, all the exhaustion he’d staved off from the completion of their hunt the night before came rushing back, falling over Dean like a heavy blanket. His eyelids fluttered, trying to stay open to watch Stan in the forest, then closing again with some finality.

Avenues of life?

And, after a long time full of guesses and fun, we have a winner!

In Avenue of Life, Stan Baker has to decide what to do with his life, now that it’s been given back to him. After being enslaved by a witch, the future is completely open, and that’s a terrifying notion for someone new to freedom.

How many roads must a man walk down?

–The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

Time for a sneak peek!

“Well,” Sam started, having difficulty beginning, “you see…”

“We’re not going to make your decisions for you,” Dean interrupted, taking over for Sam. He folded his arms on the table. “As far as we’re concerned, your life is your own.” That statement was near and dear to his heart. After seeing the borrower’s mistreatment at the hands of the witch, Dean wasn’t about to be a party to anything like that.

“So if you want, we can keep you with us and find your old home,” Sam offered, listing out the choices the brothers had come up with during the long ride, “or we can find you somewhere else to live, somewhere away from humans.”

Dean shrugged, hampered slightly by the way his arms were crossed. “Or you can skip out on us now. We’re not keeping you a prisoner just because we’re bigger.”

Stan blinked, a confused frown pinching his brow as his attention switched from brother to brother as they spoke. The notion of being allowed a choice for his life was a foreign concept that didn’t process fully in his mind. To him, it made no sense. Sam and Dean were bigger, much stronger, therefore they held Stan’s more insignificant life in their hands. That made him theirs.

Didn’t it?

“I-I,” he stammered when he realized they were waiting for a response from him. He really didn’t know how to answer.

His only other experience with humans was Nicholas, and the witch would occasionally ask him questions that sounded like the answer would be an opinion or a choice, but there was only one true answer that would make him happy. What the brothers were offering didn’t sound so dissimilar to those, and even if they were otherwise different from Nicholas in almost every way, he didn’t want to make them unhappy.

October 17th excerpt:

“It is nice to breathe air that isn’t recycled,” said Stan genuinely. With another long inhale, he carefully maneuvered himself a little closer to the front of Dean’s shoulder, setting himself down between the collar and his neck and curiously peeking out in the direction Dean was heading. Once he even dared to glance down the sheer cliff Dean’s torso made, see those massive legs swing out to carry his unfathomable weight forward another step.

For the one brief second Stan got to see that, it was both fascinating and terrifying.

October 15th excerpt:

With a frown, Sam waved vaguely at the front of the room. “Might rain later,” he warned.

Dean had to smirk at that. “I think we’ll survive,” he said, and held out a hand near Stan. “I’ll keep an eye on the sky for us.”

How will tiny Stan (from Brothers Chosen) react if they ever meet Nathan? Or even at the Lounge

At the point where Chosen starts, Stan and Nate haven’t met, so they’d both be a little shocked if they met in the Lounge. BC Nate is human, of course, so Stan would be stunned to see a human like him. Nate recognizes Stan, so he’s likely to come close for a look at this smol version. Stan gets a very up close view of those captivating eyes…

Stan would have a lot of confusing feelings.

October 9th excerpt:

Once he was in place, Dean shooed Stan off. “Now got get him so we can get this thing started.”

Stan just barely contained a chuckle to see Dean waving him off from his perch, still working out the boundaries there and not wanting to come off as patronizing. With a cheeky salute, he did as he was told and headed downstairs.

October 8th excerpt:

Gently scooping Dean off his shoulder, Stan gave a small smirk and asked, “Where to, Mr. Winchester?” He didn’t want to assume where Dean would prefer to be to start out.

@enby-phoenix replied to your post:

Such a polite bean.

Stan absolutely is! He’s the most polite Brit, and he’ll always offer a cuppa!

But I think this time, calling Dean such a formal name might be somewhat of an inside joke between them, considering how they first met.

Bonus excerpt:

“Mr. Holmes,” the man greeted. Sherlock hummed to himself, noting the distinct lack of an Irish dialect.

The man’s brow shot up when he caught sight of the tiny figure contrasting the deep blue folds of Sherlock’s scarf.

“And… Mr. Winchester?” he guessed at length.

Dean straightened in place, letting the scarf fall down from his shoulders so more of him could be seen. “Mister Winchester is my dad,” he corrected, his voice level and even to avoid betraying any nerves. “You can call me Dean.”
