I’ll Be Back Soon (1/2)

The earlier post about Oscar’s family, as many have come to realize, was misleading. While all of it is true, it doesn’t indicate the fact that around a year before Oscar met Sam and Dean in their motel room, his mother disappeared. She taught him everything he knows, but of course the lessons were incomplete because he was only seven at the time. Oscar is a lot tougher than he thinks he is, but he will always be a mama’s boy and he will always miss her.

She tucked him into bed before she left. I’ll be back soon, she whispered to him. It was always best to go looking for supplies late at night, while the humans were sleeping. She kissed his forehead and her hair fell over his face, making him scrunch up his nose from the tickle.

And then, with her bag and her safety pin hook, she was gone.

Oscar thought he might surprise her. He crept out of his bed and into the small main room of their house. He would wait up for his mama to get home, so he could help her put away what she found and give her another big hug before going to sleep.

He clambered up onto one of the wooden spools at their table, seating himself comfortably on it. His legs kicked back and forth a little, since they didn’t reach the floor, and he propped his arms on the table to wait.

Oscar ended up falling asleep with his arms at the table, slumped over in exhaustion.

When he woke, he jolted a little to find himself still sitting up. Brown eyes blinked with confusion as he peered around. There was light peeking in from the one crack up in the wall, telling him that it was morning already.

Did mama go straight to bed and not see me? he wondered. Oscar hopped down from his spool and padded softly over to the curtained doorway to his mom’s room. Her bed was a little bigger than his, and the blankets were messy. But she wasn’t in it.

“Mom?” Oscar called curiously, looking around their small home. Of course, no answer came. Oscar shuffled around just in case, looking behind every curtain and under every blanket in both beds. He checked the pantry, but it was just as sparse as it had been before she left. There was only a few days’ worth of food left.

Confused, Oscar sat down on the ring box that they used as a chair. He picked up a scrap of cloth his mother had been using to teach him how to dethread human fabric so it could be used for them. He’d just have to do his chores while he waited for his mother to come home. This wasn’t the first time she’d taken a little extra time finding food for them.

~~~
Five days and five meals later, the pantry was empty.
On the seventh night, Oscar cried himself to sleep, exhausted by the hunger that burned him up on the inside.
On her eighth night away, Oscar picked up his blankets and moved them to the top of the pile on her bed, and then crawled underneath the whole lot. He could still smell her on the nest of foam and fabric that was her bed. He didn’t cry as much before drifting off to sleep.
On the ninth day, he got to eat, because the friendly mouse visited and brought him some stale bread. She had always been so nice. She let Oscar put his arms around her neck and bury his face in her fur, grateful for the present she brought him.
But his mom still didn’t come home.
He spent the entire night in the sink, hurling his guts out with Dean helpfully (or not-so-helpfully) dousing him with water from time to time. If he got too cold, Dean would pick him up so he could warm up in his brother’s hands. Other than that, it was an unexciting night in the life of a Winchester.
I’ve always found myself wondering what people like more. My completely original storylines (which are much more fun to write) or the brief episode-centric plots that I tackle (harder to write, but often hit on an important point in Sam and Dean’s relationship that’s hard to skip over).
Originally when BA started, it was based off of the plot of the show, a ‘what-if’ scenario if you tore Sam away from his family. It’s evolved since then. A lot of the story has evolved past the original intention. You’re going to see similarities to canon, and you always will because it is Supernatural and I never want to lose that feeling. But you’re going to see a lot more original plot lines and stories than I thought I’d come up with just over a year ago when it started.
The overall story arc is (and has been) planned out with Celeste, and you’ll be seeing her pop up when you least expect it. There will be much, much more with sprites… both my Aeternum babies that have already appeared multiple times in the story and the little earthbound babies that have yet to show their faces in the series. Just like how humans in Aeternum are almost unrecognizable compared to the humans of earth, the sprites that you see in our world will bear no resemblance to the sisters.
Most of the monsters that I enjoy writing are mine and mine alone, but there is always the chance of a good ‘ole fashioned Supernatural baddie rearing its head.
I sincerely hope you enjoy what I have planned. I really do pour my soul into my writing and this series has gotten me through a lot of rough times at work (in fact, it still is considering this week at work tanked about ten minutes in). Getting to answer everyone’s questions is one of the parts of my day I enjoy the most and reading the reviews or comments I get from everyone cheers me up no matter how upsetting life can be. ❤
Oh, you’ll see many more sprites. Plus, you didn’t think I commissioned artwork of my Elenia, born of Ilyana, just for kicks, did you? 😉
All in reference to this Sneak Peek.
I wish I could give out hints, but the story won’t be seen from again until at least after the tenth part of Brothers Apart finishes. Once that is over there won’t be a chance of spoiling any of the fun from that special edition storyline, and new fun will be starting.
New fun, including a poll to decide which story from the AU’s that I’ve been developing while stuck in writer’s block for BA. You’ll decide which story will be aired first at that time. 😉
Bobby and Walt encountering each other isn’t something that I’ll be tackling currently…
Considering their run of luck, it’s a definite possibility. Dean takes every precaution around the room when they’re alone, including salt lines around the room and sleeping with his colt under his pillow. Sam doesn’t go far from Dean at night, sleeping on the pillow next to where his brother is.
And most nights, Dean hugs the pillow he’s on.
If anything happens, they’ll have to deal with it as best they can.
Currently, he’s off on a hunt and gave the brothers a timeline of about a month before he returns. He’ll be seen again.
It would be hard and ill-advised to keep secrets like Oscar’s people away from him, but they could only risk it if they knew the little guys in the walls were safe. They can’t risk Oscar’s secret lightly. Considering his son is one of them, John wouldn’t be likely to hunt them.
And if he tried, Dean would stand against him.
BT Dean height
I think BT Dean being taller than canon Dean would make sense honestly now that it’s mentioned, since lack of good nutrition/ food really does stunt growth. So now that Dean doesn’t have to sacrifice nearly as much for Sam, maybe he would grow that extra inch or two.
