But WHY WINGS

( Dean + wings )

AU: Brothers Apart

Timeline: During A Lich of Sense, after Dean’s arm is bitten and they are on their way to Wellwood.

“But why wings? ”

Sam blinked, having started to drift off during their trip through the forest. He didn’t exactly have much he could do, between Bowman guiding Dean towards his village and Dean doing the actual walking. On the opposite shoulder, Bowman frowned critically and eyed Dean’s profile. His attention had been on guiding the human back, but now he was more concerned by the sudden outburst.

There hadn’t been much conversation since starting off aside from Bowman’s directions, over on Dean’s other shoulder. Sam had to smirk at that, entertained by the thought of his brother serving as a taxi to people the size of his finger. Dean Winchester, the man monsters had nightmares about, ferrying around the tiniest people around.

The smile soon fled. Dean was growing weaker. Sam couldn’t stop from glancing at his brother’s injured arm, the bloodsoaked sleeve of his jacket a poignant reminder of just how much damage the wolves had done to him during their fight.

That, and the odd non sequiturs Dean kept blurting out.

“Wings, Dean?” Sam asked, curious despite himself.

Yes, wings,” Dean pronounced, gesturing wildly with his good arm. Luckily, the arm that was attached to the shoulder Sam was perched on, and he was prepared for the movement. Bowman, who wasn’t prepared, nearly fluttered off of his perch to avoid the erratic movement, but before he could complain, Dean went right on with his rant.

“Everyone we meet these days has wings! We’ve got small fry over here, but then you remember Nixie? And Ilyana? Wings. Nixie couldn’t even function without hers! It’s like having you with me automatically attracts the first people with wings in the state right to us!” On his shoulder, Bowman lifted a wing to peer at it with an eyebrow raised, wondering why exactly it mattered.

Sam rubbed his face. “Y’know, I don’t think Bowman wanted to run into us…” he pointed out, wondering what had brought this on.

“Spirit’s truth,” muttered out from the perplexed sprite sitting opposite him.

“He’s here, ain’t he?” Dean asked knowingly. “I’m shocked you didn’t end up with wings. That’s just what I’d need. A pint-sized brother fluttering around my head. You know what happens if you have a Dean with wings?”

The silence drew out until Sam realized he was supposed to respond. “What? What happens if we’ve got a Dean with wings?”

“Nothing good!”

With that, Dean nodded sharply to himself, and resumed his previous trek through the forest.

Bowman would definitely be wary of Rumsfeld on first sight of him. A Rottweiler might not look super similar to its wolfish ancestor, but Rumsfeld is still a large creature with sharp teeth that are clearly meant for meat-eating. Bowman would make sure he stayed well out of range of the friendly puppy, no matter how much whining Rumsfeld did. Just picture a sprite perched up on the curtains with his little leafy wings flared wide open. That’d be Bowman.

As a matter of fact, there is one! Fairy Tales: Bowman of Wellwood is my ( @neonthewrite) story that is entirely stand alone from Supernatural or the Brothers Apart multiverses. The first collaboration that @nightmares06 and I worked on was A Lich of Sense, essentially a crossover of our two main storylines, so the Bowman (and his Jacob) in that story experienced all of the events from Bowman of Wellwood.

As for the second question, we will just have to wait and see as Brothers Apart progresses! 😉 But, if we remember from Lich, Dean gave Bowman a business card with his phone number on it, and someone has to dial the phone for that little sprite. He doesn’t have a phone of his own.

And, Dean and Sam have actually been in contact with Jacob since the end of Lich! Jacob… didn’t quite believe Bowman’s tale, so to prove himself right, Bowman had Jacob call up the brothers.

Wakeup Call

neonthewrite:

Another one from this post and sent in to @brothersapart. This one is most likely Fairy Tales canon, though I don’t have a specific time for it to be set.

Reading Time less than 5 minutes

Camping had a rugged charm to it that couldn’t be replaced. Jacob always enjoyed a chance to hike out to the middle of the woods where he could relax and ignore the outside world for a while. He could sit in his clearing and watch the blue sky give way to yellows and purples before finally allowing a black stage for the stars.

Sleeping under those stars, glancing up before he drifted off to spot a shooting star streaking across the sky. Dozing off at last to the gentle sound of the breeze in the canopy. Dreaming peacefully and hoping the following day would bring a visit from his best friend.

Waking up with a small green shape right in front of his eyes that wasn’t there before.

“Jesus-fuck!” Jacob stammered, flinching back while still wrapped up in his sleeping bag. The small shape fluttered backwards, just as startled as he was, and Jacob squirmed to free his arm from the sleeping back.

“Thanks for deafening me!” Bowman complained, his snarky voice reaching Jacob as he freed a hand to drag it down his face.

“Thanks for … you were like an inch in front of my face, dude,” Jacob pointed out exasperatedly.

Bowman fluttered into the air and flew in a lazy circle around Jacob’s head now that the human was awake. “You must have walked up after I finished my patrols for the day yesterday,” he pointed out. His tone suggested that he was perfectly aware of the rapid subject change, and didn’t care.

Jacob sluggishly swatted a hand at Bowman in mock annoyance, aiming to miss. “Yeah, didn’t expect a wake up call is all.”

“I’m just generous like that,” Bowman shot back, a chuckle in his voice.

Prompted from this post, and sent in to @brothersapart.

This is canon to Fairy Tales, and takes place sometime before Bowman met Jacob and discovered that humans exist.

Approx. reading time: ~5 mins

It wasn’t the first time Bowman had stayed out later than he should. The balmy summer heat and the long sunsets always played tricks on him, prompting him to fly just a little farther. Bowman relished his days out of the village, exploring his forest and learning every tree, every boulder, every animal trail.

At night, by contrast, Wellwood became foreboding and dangerous. Bowman was not equipped to handle the predators that could all but blend into the shadows.

Just his blasted luck that he found himself too far out to make it home before the sun hid its face at last.

Umbrella

Ooomg you’re so sweet! ;o; Thank you so much for the kind words!

The prompt is Hands from this list, with Jacob and Bowman. I really enjoyed doing this one. I’ll be working on more prompts that I didn’t get done in the last couple batches (hopefully) as well as any new ones that have come in for the 100 GT themes!

This is Fairy Tales canon, probably the spring after Jacob and Bowman first met.

Approx. Reading time: ~5 minutes

The sky above Jacob’s clearing had been a murky grey all morning. The springtime brought with it new, vibrant green leaves to form a brand new canopy over the forest of Wellwood, and that green crown formed a ring around the steel grey overhead. Jacob had made the trip hoping for more sun, since it meant his small friend would have more energy to be out and about.

That hadn’t stopped Bowman. They’d met at the clearing as they usually did. Bowman had made it part of his routine to check the clearing every day just in case Jacob popped in for another visit to the forest. He didn’t live nearby, and so it was never certain when he would have the chance.

Sam: I think I’ll just stick with hands unless they really need the magnifying glass…

Dean: No one’s getting close to me with a magnifying glass, not so long as they want to keep that hand. This knife ain’t made to just look pretty, y’know.

Jacob: Magnifying glass and tweezers? Dude. That’d suck. No matter how careful they are, I don’t know if they’ll slip or pinch me. It’d feel like they were trying to do science or something.

Bowman: I’d really prefer neither. I can take care of myself better than any giant. But if I have to choose, I would prefer they just use their hands. That way they can feel if I need to kick them to keep ‘em in line!

Oscar: Um… They’d both make me really nervous. I don’t … I don’t know! I-I guess … the magnifying glass would be less crowded.

Bree: What’s wrong with hands and having their face close? I think the metal tweezers sounds so much worse!

Zepheera: Wow, er…really glad I heal too quickly to need help like that. I guess if I had the choice, I’d rather not have a great big face in my personal space. And as long as I trusted those hands, I’d go with those. Tweezers are no fun.

Bowman Lost (Preview)

neonthewrite:

Bowman – Lost. Originally from this post, I was inspired by this prompt to go a little further than with the other little drabbles. This prompt will end up being canon to the Brothers Lost supernatural GT au co-written with @nightmares06. It will follow what’s been going on with Bowman Leafwing while Sam, Dean, and Jacob are traveling around saving people and hunting things.

It’s not finished yet, but I have a sneak peek to get everyone started.

Glancing down, Bowman reflected that maybe his luck wasn’t so terrible after all. Stuck hanging in the air, no matter how uncomfortable, was better than stuck lying on the ground.

Down there, any predator could stalk up to him, vicious claws caressing the dirt, and snap him up. Bowman was more helpless than he had ever been, and he still didn’t understand just what had happened.

He wasn’t supposed to venture too far in his patrols. He was meant to fly in a radius around the village at the forest of Wellwood’s center, watching for danger. All he had to do was warn everyone of anything he saw and he was doing his job right. Even so, flying for long days exhilarated Bowman like nothing else, and so he took what excuses he could. Like any rebellious wood sprite, he’d always bent rules.

You BREAK the rules, Bowman, not just bend them! a voice piped up in his memory, sweet and colored with a laugh. Rischa, his young cousin, would surely scold him for a week once he got out of this one.

He’d flown farther than he ever dared before. When he found a tall wall made of metal grids, he had to explore beyond it. He convinced himself it was for the good of the village.

Now he was stuck in some mess of discarded rope. It was as embarrassing as it was uncomfortable.

The teeny little Jake in the horror story isn’t quite that small… his friends give him an estimated height of about an inch and a half, but they don’t have any rulers around to measure him by. Small enough to be a teddy bear to a man four inches tall (Sam’s claimed), yet still big enough to manage some interaction with Dean without any outside help, so long as the hunter is paying close attention.
