Well… I can’t really promise there won’t be any major character deaths.

And crying. There will be crying because I have been crying at some parts. Also, writing the horror story actually gave me and @neonthewrite nightmares. So there’s that, too.

I actually lived up to my nightmares name at last.

Mallory, one of my favorite characters to write, died off in the first story. I was happy to be able to bring her back in AU fics, but then we went and made her cry, too, so now I feel guilty all over again.

Mallory sat herself on the foam of the bed she shared with Walt. The warmth of the blankets she’d lovingly crafted for her family couldn’t touch the shard of ice that had lodged in her heart.

As her tall boys fought, ignoring the threat of any humans nearby hearing them, she sat there and cried and watched her family fracture.

Well, they’d be trapped in that motel. Saved by Walt and Mallory, stuck waiting in a motel with their lives going nowhere unless…

Oh, wait. This is one of those times when I get an idea for an entire crossover AU.

How about we call it Brothers Lost?

He was supposed to be out there. Saving people. Hunting things.

He wasn’t supposed to be the victim. Trapped by a witch and a curse that tore his entire world away. Everything gone but Sam himself.

Send in any prompts you think of for this idea and read the little drabble I came up with below!

I’m thinking if it gets written in its entirety, it’ll be added into the supply of AU ideas that have been written out and I’ll poll for which of these stories people want posted once A Lich of Sense is finished! (Some AU’s contain spoilers for that story)

Other AU’s created for this so far include Brothers Together and the ‘verse where a kid finds Sam before Dean. And one that no one has guessed so far. And now Brothers Lost.

“You know, you’ve done a lot of stupid things before, but this has to take the cake!”

Dean rolled his eyes and didn’t break stride. Sam had to walk faster to catch up, grumbling about his older brother’s stubborn behavior.

“Dammit, Dean. We can’t go into that room. We have no idea when that kid’s coming back. Hell, for all we know he just stepped outside to take a smoke!”

Sam finally got a hand on Dean’s shoulder, and tried to whirl him around. Dean caught his arm and used his momentum against him, sending him flying into the ground with a practiced motion. He grinned down at the frazzled Sam he was holding down. “You’re getting soft there, kiddo.”

Sam made a face and kicked up with a leg. He managed to catch Dean’s side, flipping him onto the ground in seconds. “You were saying, jackass?”

“Get off me.”

Sam helped Dean to his feet. “C’mon, let’s just head back, wait until it’s night. We can hit the room then. Walt never has to know we were here.”

Dean threw him a look. “All you do is argue with Walt! I can’t believe what I’m hearing!”

“Sure, I argue with him, but this? And for what – a slice of pie?”

Dean held out his arms. “How often do we see a slice of pie left out in a room? Hell, how often do we see it just vanish into the fridge whether they remember it or not? Sam, I’ve got to try. We might not get this chance again!”

It hurt for him to admit that, but it was sadly true for them both. Thirteen years ago, they’d gone to a motel with their dad. He was on a hunt, searching for missing children in the area.

He’d left them alone in the room.

Dean wasn’t completely sure what had happened that night. He could remember a woman, standing inside the door. The door itself bolted shut. Himself, slammed against the wall.

A flash of white hitting Sam.

Before Dean could react past the shock that covered his face, the same flash had slammed into him.

Then he was falling.

The next thing he could remember was waking up, his entire world changed. It was dark. Closed off. Two people were in the room watching over them. A woman, her blonde hair and blue eyes gentle as she helped Dean off of the stacked up fabric. She was tiny, even next to himself as a kid. In fact, Sam wasn’t far off of her height back then. He’d outgrown her in only a few years.

Mallory and Walt had tried to convince him, but he didn’t want to see the truth. He didn’t want to hear that he’d been cursed and stood under four inches tall.

He’d found Sam. They’d tried to run off into dark corridors, following dusty paths. Walt had found them in time to get them to safety. In his urgency, Dean had burst into an occupied motel room.

Occupied by giants.

Over the years they’d both come to terms with their new lives. Walt and Mallory had helped them adjust to the way things were. Finding supplies, knowing where and when to find food. All the lessons that they both needed to know to survive.

These days, Dean lived on his own. He’d found a place to make his own and had spent his time adjusting it to be livable just like Walt and Mallory had done with their own. Mallory helped him with fabrics, making up wall hangings to drape on the walls and covers for his own nest of blankets. Sam had a bed of his own back with Walt and Mallory. Dean had insisted that his younger brother use it back when they’d discovered it in abandoned motel room.

Sam came to stay with him more often than not. It didn’t feel right to be too far apart after everything they’d survived together. Dean knew that it was assumed that Sam would eventually court Krissy, but Sam was uncomfortable with the idea. There were no girls in the area that were Dean’s age, so he was left on his own.

To brood, mostly.

Which was why Sam had a habit of showing up at the worst times, trying to keep his big brother’s mind off of their situation.

Like right now, when he was trying to sneak into a room where the guest had left out a slice of pie.

I mean, who can turn down a slice of pie?

( Part 6 of 6 )

Darkness was falling by the time he returned to the small home he shared with his beautiful wife.

There were tears in her eyes as she opened up the door, pushing aside the block of wood that kept out the bugs and spiders that shared the world with them.

“Walt, oh, you’re home!” She flew into his arms. It didn’t matter that she barely reached his chest. Her hug had enough force to knock the breath from his lungs.

Walt hugged her back, desperately relieved to see her again. He pulled out of the hug only to share a passionate kiss.

“I want to have a baby with you,” he murmured as they came up for air. His days in the cage left him wanting to leave something behind, someone to remember him and someone to keep Mallory company if he was ever lost. He blinked back tears of his own, sharing his greatest desire with her. “I want to be a father.”

Theirs was a hard life, but it was theirs.

Mallory stared up at him, her lips parted in surprise. “Oh, my love,” she said breathlessly, pulling him into another hug.

He found himself pulled over so she could whisper in his ear. She brought his hand to her stomach to let him feel the bump that was forming. “You’ll be a father soon. I’m pregnant.”

Bobby and his past with the borrowers has always been a popular topic. Now you’ve seen the borrowers in the field and the borrower he saved… none other than Walt Watch, the man who went on to save Sam Winchester in turn thirteen years later.

( Part 2 of 6 )

Walt’s back was to the steel mesh of the cage. The wall lay beyond, towering over his head. If he was to stare straight up at where it intersected the ceiling, he would get vertigo.

Humans were that big.

He was alone at the moment. The humans that had captured him were out celebrating. They anticipated he would pull in a large sum of cash in the black markets. There was no way out for him, after all. No escape.

No hope.

Only the knowledge that his small wife would mourn him.

No one else.

She was so fragile. Barely a wisp of a girl that had taken in his sorry ass. They were even hoping to have their first child soon. Continue on with the next generation of the Watch family.

Now it seemed his family line would end with him. The last surviving son of a dead line. The youngest brother was now the last.

He prayed that Mallory would move on without him. Find someone new to share her love with. She deserved all that and more. If he wasn’t around to give it to her, there would be someone else out there that would. There had to be.

That thought was all he had to hold on to.

He stared straight ahead, unmoving. For minutes at a time he didn’t even blink. Time passed at a crawl, but it did pass. The light outside started to shift to evening and he knew his time would soon come.

It wasn’t long after the warm hue of sunset began to spill into the room that he was made aware of a new sound infringing on his silence.

Footsteps.

Walt

This is a special prompt, inspired by several different asks I’ve received recently. Which ones will remain unknown until the story conclusion. Walt’s background has been planned out for a long time.

BA Canon: Yes

Timeline: 1980

( Part 1 of 6 )

It’s funny how silence is.

It creeps in on you, weighing you down like a tangible substance.

Every sound becomes magnified.

A creak in the wall could be the end approaching. The quiet rustle of the curtains against the window was a threat in the still air.

The silence itself will eventually become deafening. All thought is washed away in the stillness. It is like the roar of the ocean as it wears down the shoreline.

Walt sat in silence.

His eyes remained glued on his greatest enemy. His nemesis. A construct created by humanity for the purpose of keeping things they wanted to keep. A pet, an object, not a person with a mind and will of his own. Trapped inside a steel mesh cage with wires that were thicker than his fingers. A human might hope to bend them. Walt would never be so lucky.

He stared at the lock that sat innocuously clasped around the cage door.

For days he’d sat inside the cage. Trapped like nothing more than an animal. Fed a base diet of stale crackers and water almost absently by people that couldn’t be bothered to care about the person they had snatched away from his life.

Mallory must think he was dead.

It was what he’d expect if he was the one waiting. To be caught and killed. Humans thought they were pests, after all. Rodents to be snuffed out. If the careful gathering of supplies went noticed by the humans that ran the small bed and breakfast, Trails West, mouse traps would begin to appear around the kitchen areas.

Those were dark times. The small people that lived in the walls would do their best to help their only allies in the world, the mice, find food. Everyone would have to band together, and even that was dangerous. Gathering all the families in one place would put them all at risk, make them easier to find.

But sometimes it needed to be done.

There was safety, and danger, in numbers.

Part 1 || Part 2 || Part 3 || Part 4 || Part 5 || Part 6

While growing up, Sam did attempt to adopt a mouse pup. He kept her hidden in his room and snuck her food for a few weeks. Once Mallory found out, she had Sam take her back to her mother. Ever since then she’d come to visit him and occasionally bring him trinkets or food that she didn’t need. She wanted to take care of her Sammy as much as he wanted to take care of her.

In the AU where Dean saves him, terrifying. He woke up with no idea that anything had changed. The only redeeming factor was he was alone with Dean at first. It was for the best. Having John or even Bobby around would be too much for him to take. It could never be enough time to adjust, but at least Dean gave him time to take it all in before anyone started to question him.

In the actual Brothers Apart, very confusing. He woke up with Walt and Mallory watching over him, so concerned for this small boy they rescued. It wasn’t until he tried to run away from them and find his way back to his family that he discovered that they were telling him the truth. Walt had to haul him out of a motel room with a sleeping family in it, saving Sam’s ass. After that, there was no denying what had happened.

The newest prompt had a choice between Walt, Mallory or Krissy. Walt is the only likely one in that group to go out to the rooms to get supplies. Krissy always goes with someone else, most often Sam, and Mallory doesn’t leave their home or the walls often. She mostly keeps at home since she’s so small. Walt and Sam can defend themselves much better than her.

Lucky Walt

Walt vs. Dean

Walt and Mallory Watch

Walt and Mallory are the two people that saved Sam from the witch when he was ten years old. No one knows what his fate would have been if they hadn’t been in the room during the attack.

They lost their daughter, Briella Watch, a year previous to Sam’s rescue, and in many ways her loss was what prompted his rescue. Neither of them would stand to see any more children suffer, so when Walt happened upon the witch talking in a scrying pool and getting instructions to take both brothers, they took it upon themselves to find the boys and warn them. This warning came to late to save Sam from his curse.

Years later, when Dean discovers Sam hiding in his motel room and only standing four inches tall, their home is attacked. Mallory was killed off by the demon that took away Sam and Dean’s mother Mary. Walt was lucky enough to get knocked out of the danger zone, coming to in Krissy’s home days later to discover his wife was dead and his son had abandoned him.

After a hard year, Walt’s loss is offset by the return of his daughter, Bree. Sam and Dean saved her from her captors and brought her back home. For the first time in his life, he’s discovering that humans might not all be as terrible as he thought.

Extras:

  • With Walt standing at a height of 3.8 inches, this would make him Dean’s equal in height at 6′1 if they were to stand at the same height.
  • Mallory, on the other hand, is incredibly petite. At only 3 inches tall, she would come out to 4′10. She always used to say she likes her boys tall!
  • Walt is a tanner and Mallory is an expert seamstress. These skills are incredibly useful when nothing is catered to your size.
  • Before Sam and his knife, Walt would face off against rats in the motel with nothing more than his old razor. Dean would be impressed with his stubborn determination.
  • All of Sam’s clothes were fashioned by his parents, and his boots were handcrafted by Walt. They might look a little rough around the edges compared to Dean’s but they work just as well.
