Walt

Timeline: 1980

( Part 2 of 6 )

Walt’s back was to the steel mesh of the cage. The wall lay beyond, towering over his head. If he was to stare straight up at where it intersected the ceiling, he would get vertigo.

Humans were that big.

He was alone at the moment. The humans that had captured him were out celebrating. They anticipated he would pull in a large sum of cash in the black markets. There was no way out for him, after all. No escape.

No hope.

Only the knowledge that his small wife would mourn him.

No one else.

She was so fragile. Barely a wisp of a girl that had taken in his sorry ass. They were even hoping to have their first child soon. Continue on with the next generation of the Watch family.

Now it seemed his family line would end with him. The last surviving son of a dead line. The youngest brother was now the last.

He prayed that Mallory would move on without him. Find someone new to share her love with. She deserved all that and more. If he wasn’t around to give it to her, there would be someone else out there that would. There had to be.

That thought was all he had to hold on to.

He stared straight ahead, unmoving. For minutes at a time he didn’t even blink. Time passed at a crawl, but it did pass. The light outside started to shift to evening and he knew his time would soon come.

It wasn’t long after the warm hue of sunset began to spill into the room that he was made aware of a new sound infringing on his silence.

Footsteps.

Walt

This is a special prompt, inspired by several different asks I’ve received recently. Which ones will remain unknown until the story conclusion. Walt’s background has been planned out for a long time.

Timeline: 1980

( Part 1 of 6 )

It’s funny how silence is.

It creeps in on you, weighing you down like a tangible substance.

Every sound becomes magnified.

A creak in the wall could be the end approaching. The quiet rustle of the curtains against the window was a threat in the still air.

The silence itself will eventually become deafening. All thought is washed away in the stillness. It is like the roar of the ocean as it wears down the shoreline.

Walt sat in silence.

His eyes remained glued on his greatest enemy. His nemesis. A construct created by humanity for the purpose of keeping things they wanted to keep. A pet, an object, not a person with a mind and will of his own. Trapped inside a steel mesh cage with wires that were thicker than his fingers. A human might hope to bend them. Walt would never be so lucky.

He stared at the lock that sat innocuously clasped around the cage door.

For days he’d sat inside the cage. Trapped like nothing more than an animal. Fed a base diet of stale crackers and water almost absently by people that couldn’t be bothered to care about the person they had snatched away from his life.

Mallory must think he was dead.

It was what he’d expect if he was the one waiting. To be caught and killed. Humans thought they were pests, after all. Rodents to be snuffed out. If the careful gathering of supplies went noticed by the humans that ran the small bed and breakfast, Trails West, mouse traps would begin to appear around the kitchen areas.

Those were dark times. The small people that lived in the walls would do their best to help their only allies in the world, the mice, find food. Everyone would have to band together, and even that was dangerous. Gathering all the families in one place would put them all at risk, make them easier to find.

But sometimes it needed to be done.

There was safety, and danger, in numbers.

Is it a mouse?

Dean didn’t want to risk having any unknown animals darting around the room. He slipped quietly off the bed, creeping over towards the wall. He ignored a curious question shot his way from Sam, who was finally taking note of his older brother’s odd behavior.

“Gimme a sec,” Dean muttered over his shoulder.

He saw the movement again, and lunged forward. Two hands slammed around the small animal, trapping it between them. The show was completely forgotten as Dean stood back up, eyes wide as he stared down at his hands.

Did I see what I thought I saw?

“What is it, Dean?” Sam asked, taking a few hesitant steps forward on the uneven surface of the bed.

Just as curious as Sam, Dean cracked open his hands so he could peek inside at what he’d caught. He sucked in a gasp of surprise and slammed them shut, staring back at Sam in dismay.

It was a kid even smaller than Sammy.

Who did Dean just catch? Find out on Monday!

Waking Dean

Timeline: Future Story

“C’mon Dean,” Sam gritted out, determined. “You need to wake up.” Giving up on the easy way, Sam kicked the cheek he was standing next to. A few more kicks to the cheek and one directed at the nose and he heard a rumbling from Dean as his brother finally started to wake up.

The next part happened too fast for Sam to react.

He’d always known Dean’s reflexes were sharp – after all, Dean had been able to catch Sam without even seeing him the first time they’d met back up not so long ago. A lifetime of hunting dangerous creatures does that to a person.

But he had no idea they were just as sharp asleep.

The second Dean’s eyes slotted open, he moved. The hand that came for Sam was lightning quick, to fast and too big for him to dodge out of the way in time. He had no choice but to curl up into a ball as he was helplessly scooped up off the bed by Dean’s thick fingers. He pulled his arms and legs in as close as he could to his body so they wouldn’t get snapped when the fingers closed tightly around him.

The huge silver ring his brother wore dug uncomfortably into his shoulder the way he was held. Sam tried his best to not squirm, afraid the movement might make Dean tighten the fist around him even more before he was fully awake and found out it was Sam he was holding. He was strong enough to crush Sam by accident if he wasn’t careful.

The whole world flipped around Sam as Dean moved, disorienting him and making his headache beat out a staccato tempo inside his skull. Sam groaned, trying to move enough to free his arm so he could rub his head and hopefully take away some of the pressure. No matter what he did, both his arms remained pinned to his side, held there by Dean’s solid grip. He could feel the hand moving, raising higher into the air as Sam’s stomach clenched with vertigo, unable to see where he was going. You would think he’d be used to this after spending the last few months with Dean, but no. Still nauseating, especially since he couldn’t see where he was being lifted to.

“Sammy?” His brother’s voice, groggy from sleep, filled the air around Sam. “Isat’chu?”

The tight grip around him loosened as Dean finally realized what he had clenched in his fist. Relieved, Sam relaxed from his huddled ball of limbs as the slightly sweaty palm under him tilted, rolling him onto his back so he was facing Dean’s worried face, bare inches away.

“Sam? What the hell are you doing? Are you alright?” A huge finger approached from the side, gently propping Sam up.

Sam rubbed his head, trying to focus his thoughts back from being discombobulated and scrambled. He wrapped an arm around the finger, using it to keep his balance while his head was still spinning.

Noticing this, Dean leaned even closer. “Shit Sam, did I hurt you?”

Sam waved Dean away, unable to meet the magnified worry in the green eyes he was suspended in front of. “I’m fine, just a little shaken.” He rubbed his head again. “Wasn’t really expecting to go for a ride just trying to wake you up.”

Sam’s family likely wouldn’t be around if something like this went down. As things are, they aren’t leaving the motel anytime soon. Out there, it’s hard to find safety. They’d have to rely completely on Dean or Bobby, and that’s a hard thing to do. Handing their safety, and the safety of their family over to a human isn’t an easy choice to make.

Sam may indeed find out his true height in Brothers Apart…

( Part 4 of 4 )

The sound of stumbling came from behind Dean, and he whipped around, catching the man behind him in shock.

“Sam?!”

The person he held in his arms only bore a passing resemblance to the four inch hunter he’d had at his side, flinching away from Dean’s voice. Sam was massive and built, a good few inches taller than Dean himself. But those hazel eyes, despite the way they darted about in a panic, were the most familiar eyes he’d ever seen. His hair was a mess, ragged and longer than ever. His clothing was tattered. A massive hook hung out of his satchel, the three prongs glinting in the sunlight and the clear fishing line the thickness of Dean’s pinkie.

All so familiar, yet at the same time so strange. That hook could now spear a man straight through.

“Dean?”

The voice sounded unused, hoarse. Sam’s hazel eyes tried to focus on Dean, like he didn’t believe what he was seeing. He tried desperately to pull away from the older, but now smaller hunter, but didn’t get far. There was a quivering in his limbs, a weakness that hadn’t been present before.

“Here, c’mon pint-size,” Dean said softly. He guided his brother over to the Impala, sitting him carefully down in the passenger’s side. “Drink,” he commanded, holding a water bottle up to Sam’s lips.

The younger brother let Dean give him a drink. His jacket was removed, and his satchel tossed in the back next to Dean’s duffel. Dean brushed the scattered hair out of his eyes.

“H-how?” Sam managed to croak out. “I thought… I thought you couldn’t find me. I could always hear you searching… but I just… I just kept getting smaller.

A part of Dean froze up at that confirmation of his fears. “How small?”

Sam shook his head desperately. “No idea. I just… things kept changing. I couldn’t even focus on things after awhile.” His blinking hazel eyes forced themselves to focus on Dean. “Subatomic… too small… your voice…”

Dean wet one of the handkerchiefs in his duffel, and patted it against Sam’s face, clearing off the grime and sweat that had caked up after months on his own. “I’m here now, and I’m not going anywhere.” He forced out a fake smile, remembering the year of life he had left.

“You and me together, Sasquatch.”

( Part 3 of 4 )

Dean snarled. “You bitch, bring him back!”

She came up to him, stroking a finger down his cheek. A muscle twitched at the unwelcome contact, but Dean didn’t move. “Sweet Sammy has been at Bobby’s this entire time. He’s just too… small for you to see.”

There was an urge to bite her finger off, but Dean held back. A trickle of hope came to him. “Then make him normal. Make my brother normal-sized. I’ll give you my soul for that. Ten years, this sweet ass,” he held out his arms, “is all yours.”

She chewed her lips. “No.”

“No? What do you mean, no? ” Dean grabbed her slim wrist. “That’s the deal. You give me Sam and you come to collect in ten years. End of story.”

She wasn’t even fazed by his powerful hand gripping her. She shook her head. “That’s the deal everyone else gets. But you, Dean Winchester, are a special case.

“F-five years…” Dean said, desperation rising. “I’ll give you five years.”

She didn’t even consider it. “No.” She pulled her wrist away from him, effortless once more. “Now, if you’ll excuse me…”

She turned to walk away.

“Three years?”

She closed her eyes with a grim smile at that. Satisfaction almost bled from every pore. “No.” She turned around. “One year. One year with dear Sammy, and your bill comes due.”

Dean blanched. One year. One year of life and he’d go to hell.

But for Sam, he’d do anything.

“Fine,” he growled out.

Before he even knew she was moving, he was caught up in a passionate kiss. He tried to pull away, but her bright red eyes drew him in, forcing him to seal the deal.

Then she was gone.

( Part 2 of 4 )

Dean whipped around at the voice. A woman stood there, her face passionless as she stared back at him. Red eyes glimmered at him.

A crossroad demon. The maker of deals.

Dean practically threw himself at her, grabbing her shoulders. “Bring him back!” His voice practically begged her. His brother, his partner, the person who relied on him above all others. “Bring Sammy back to life!”

The demon pulled herself out of his arms effortlessly. Pure demon strength showed through in the movement. Nothing Dean did could keep her still.

“Well what do we have here,” she clucked as her eyes changed back to the darkest brown orbs he’d ever seen. “A kicked puppy that lost his best friend.”

“Please,” Dean begged, his voice hoarse. “Please, just bring him back. You can have my soul, just bring back Sam.”

She crossed her arms and started to pace around the circle. “You Winchesters. You’re all the same, so willing to give themselves up for each other. But no.”

His heart pounded in his ears as he tried to blink away a sudden surge of anger. “No? What do you mean, no… I give you my soul, and you give me what I ask, that’s how it works.”

Red lips painted with luscious lipstick curled into a smile. More like a snarl. “I can only bring him back if he was actually dead. Now, try again.”

Not dead? Dean’s mind focused right on that thought. But he’s been gone for–

How long?

“What do you mean, he isn’t dead?” Dean snapped. “He’s been gone for…”

“Six months,” the demon supplied helpfully. “Your little Sammy hasn’t been around for six months now.”
